Importance of Transport Sector An efficient transport system is an important prerequisite for facilitating national and regional integration, promoting trade, economic development, contributing to poverty reduction wealth creation and enhancing security. Is key to the achievement of the objectives of Vision 2030 and beyond.

3. Transport Sector Modes In Kenya, the transport modes consist of the following:- Road Transport Rail Transport Maritime and Inland Water transport Pipeline transport Air Transport and Non-motorised and Intermediate Means of Transport

4. Vision 2030 is the development blueprint that aims to transform Kenya into a newly industrialized country providing a high quality of life to its citizens. Vision 2030 aspires for a country interconnected by a network of roads, railways, ports, airports and telecommunications such that no region can be referred to as “remote” MOTI is at the forefront of delivering the transport infrastructure component of Vision 2030 Immense infrastructure investment is required from public and private sources to enable attainment of Vision 2030 POLICY IN THE TRANSPORT SECTOR

5. Vision “A world-class integrated transport system responsive to the needs of people and industry” Mission “To develop, operate and maintain an efficient, cost effective, safe, secure and integrated transport system in a sustainable manner”

6. Roads Road transport is the dominant mode Carries over 80% of Passengers Carries over 93% of Freight There are: 14,000kms of bituminized roads 64,000 kms of classified roads 160,000kms of road network

7. The Roads Sector Investment Plan (2010-2024) Prioritizes the development, maintenance and rehabilitation in the country. It is expected to create 60,000 jobs annually hence contributing to poverty reduction The government expects to invest over Ksh. 7 trillion over the period Major road projects completed recently include: Nairobi-Thika Highway Isiolo-Merille River Northern and Eastern Bypasses

8. Ongoing major road projects include: Mau Summit- Kericho Kericho – Nyamasaria Nyamasaria-Kisumu-Kisian and Kisumu Bypass Kisumu – Kakamega Kakamega-Webuye Webuye – Kitale Merille River- Marsabit Sourthern Bypass Timboroa-Eldoret Eldoret-Webuye Webuye-Malaba

Rail The current major railway line consists of a Metre gauge which was constructed in 1890s The Mombasa- Kampala line has been grossly underperforming at < 4% Many lost lines- Taveta, Nanyuki, Nyahururu, Rongai Regional Agreement in place for new SGR Mombasa- Nairobi- Kampala- Kigali line and rehabilitation of existing metre gauge. Mombasa-Nairobi line construction to commence soon. RVR: Mombasa – Nairobi- Kampala carries less than 1m tonnes while the total tonnage form the port is 22 tonnes/annum Nairobi Metro rail: 20kms to be awarded in due course. The planned total network for Nairobi is 106kms Similar metros planned in Msa and Ksm

Nairobi commuter The Nairobi Commuter Rail System will be rolled in 3 phases: Phase 1: A core system within the current railway network in the city with a new line to JKIA Syokimau station commissioned. Imara Daima and Makadara almost complete. JKIA line Construction expected to commence in November 2013. Upgrade of Makadara- Embakasi village line expected to commence in the 3 rd Quarter of 2013/14 Phase 2: An expanded network within the current railway network in the city and environs Phase 3: Filling the missing links with new lines

Features of the Nairobi commuter system Increased capacity from 5M passengers to 15m Passengers initially then to 60M passengers per year in Phase 1 Modern stations and rolling stock Upgraded track and signaling systems Higher speeds, safety,comfort and reliability New line to JKIA New Stations e.g. Buru Buru, Pipeline,Umoja, Githurai,Donholm

21. Airports JKIA is a major air transport hub. It handles about 6.5million passengers per annum while its designed capacity is 2.5 million passengers/annum Capacity enhancement – Construction of Terminal 4 with a capacity of 2.5million passengers/annum is almost complete. Temporary Terminal- with a capacity of 2.5million passengers/annum is under procurement JKIA Greenfield terminal with a capacity of 12.7million passengers construction is to commence soon

The Greenfield Terminal shall be a new terminal building Capacity 22 million passengers per annum Floor area 178,000 m 2 conceived as a hub terminal for efficient connectivity for transiting passengers 50 international and 10 domestic check in positions 32 contact and 8 remote gates 45 aircraft stands and linking taxiways

25. Ports Mombasa Port is the largest and busiest port on the East African coast. It is the hub of KPA’s operations. Mombasa Port is a major port of call for international shipping lines and it serves Kenya and neighbouring landlocked countries of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Northern Tanzania.

26. Ports conti……………. Last year the port handled 903,463 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). The container traffic has been growing at average rate of approximately 9.5%. After dredging the Port has a depth of 15 metres and is able to handle large capacity ships (Panamax)

LAPPSET CORRIDOR The objectives of the LAPSSET Corridor are: To open Kenya’s second gateway to the Eastern African Region and the Great Lake Region; To establish a reliable access to the sea for Northern/Eastern parts of Kenya; and South Sudan and Ethiopia; and To facilitate trade, regional economic integration and interconnectivity between African countries – i.e Ethiopia - South Sudan- Kigali- Douala in Cameroon. It will finally create land bridge across Africa from Lamu in Kenya on the Indian Ocean side to Douala in Cameroon on the Atlantic Ocean.

32. LAPSSET Corridor Priorities Under the Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transportation Corridor (LAPSSET) project, there are multiple participation opportunities. The highway component comprises Lamu – Isiolo530Km Isiolo – Moyale 470Km Isiolo – Nakodok 720Km There are also port components, oil pipeline components,Rail, industrial components, tourism components, etc The Contract for the 3 berths at Lamu Port has been awarded. The port has a depth of 18 metres and therefore capable of handling large ships when completed
