14 What is the Apocrypha? In March 1833, the Prophet Joseph Smith was working on his inspired revision of the Bible. The copy of the Bible he was working from included the Apocrypha. The Prophet inquired whether he should translate these books, and the Lord answered him in section 91. Writings of dubious authenticity

16 2 Esdras 6:42... "On the third day thou didst command the waters to be gathered together in the seventh part of the earth; six parts thou didst dry up and keep so that some of them might be planted and cultivated and be of service before thee." It was partly by quoting this verse that Columbus managed to persuade Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain to provide the necessary financial support for his voyage.

It is the sacred, holy record of the Lord’s life … and the bedrock of all Christianity…The Bible literally contains within its pages the converting, healing Spirit of Christ, which has turned men’s hearts for centuries, leading them to pray, to choose right paths, and to search to find their Savior” (Elder Ballard) Elder M. Russell Ballard

23 Game

24 Memorizing the books of the Old Testament Consider using the following activity to review or to check students’ familiarity with the books of the Old Testament. Ask students to write numbers 1 through 10 on a piece of paper. Explain that you will call out an Old Testament book and they should open to that book as fast as they can. After calling out the name of the book, you will begin counting down from 10. When students open to that book, they will mark the last number you said on their paper and receive that number of points. (For example, if you just said “eight” and students immediately thereafter open to the book, they receive eight points.) Students will record their points on their paper as you continue the game until you have done 10 different books in the Old Testament. You might want to give the student(s) with the most points some type of reward.
