Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing By Judy Blume

This week we will begin Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, by Judy Blume. We’ll also learn how to draw conclusions about the characters in the story, based on the characters’ actions. When good readers draw conclusions about characters, they begin to understand the characters better and get more meaning from a story.

T-P-S What are some things your brother or sister does that bother you? What are some things your brother or sister does that you think are funny? How can you tell when your brother or sister is mad? These are actions

read the title, look at illustrations, and cover of book predict with evidence who the main characters of the story are and the relationship between them. What clues helped you figure this out?

You put together clues from the illustrations with what you already know about people to draw a conclusion about the characters. You draw conclusions about your friends and family all the time. You notice little things about how your friend and draw conclusions about how he or she might feel that day. You also might know how someone feels and draw conclusions about why he or she acts a certain way.

The other day I noticed that when my friend Jake came into the room he wasn’t smiling the way he usually does. He slammed his books down and slumped over his desk. Jake usually like to joke around with his friends, but that day he didn’t talk to anyone. From the way Jake acted and from what I know about him, I drew the conclusion that something was really bothering him.

We draw conclusions about characters in a story in the same way. As we read this week, pay attention to the details the author gives us about the characters. We put those clues together with what we already know about people to draw conclusions that help us understand the characters.

As we read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, we will draw conclusions about the characters. We will pay attention to clues the author gives us about the characters so we can draw conclusions about their actions and feelings.
