+ LBJ’s Domestic Policy: The Great Society War on Poverty

After winning office, Johnson declared a “War on Poverty.” He wanted to improve American society with a program he called the “Great Society.” It was designed to fight poverty, discrimination, unemployment, and pollution. Poverty in America

+ LBJ was motivated to do something about poverty in America after reading the book: “The Other America” by Michael Harrington “The poor get sick more than anyone else in society….When they become sick, they are sick longer than any other group in society. Because they are sick more often and longer than anyone else, they lose wages and work, and find it difficult to hold a steady job. And because of this, they cannot pay for good housing, for a nutritious diet, for doctor.”

+ Poverty in America Almost one-quarter of all American families were living below the poverty line. Technological advances in industry were also changing job requirements.

+ Economic Opportunity Act The most radical attempt to aid the poor. VISTA: Volunteers in Service for America Volunteers working in poor communities Head Start – gave children from poor families a leg up on public education Job Corps – trained young people who lacked job skills.

+ Healthcare Medicare: Government funded health care for the poor elderly. Medicaid: Government funded health care for the poor to help pay for medical care.

+ Education Higher Education Act of 1965 Focused on scholarships for low – income students and low-interest loans. Set up National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to support painters and artists (as the Federal Arts Project once did)

Voting Rights Act of 1965 Removed voting restrictions Immigration Act of 1965 – removed the national origins quotas that had been in place since the Immigration act of 1924 (limited certain races)
