Thursday December 3rd, 2015 Today’s Agenda: 1.Collect HW/Warm-up 2.Theme Mini-lesson w/Guided Notes 3.Guided Practice with Collaborative Groups 4.Independent Practice - revisit “The Third Wish” BREAK 1.Narrative Writing--Drafting Theme & Plot Structure Homework: Reminder = “The Third Wish” & Affix/Root Quiz on Friday 12/4

Warm-Up On a post-it note, respond to the following questions: 1.Why are Life Lessons important? 2. How do they help us function as human beings in the world? 3. Can you think of a Life Lesson that you have learned prior to this day?

Today we will... Standard RL.7.2 = Determine a theme of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text... Objective = Determine a theme for the short story “The Third Wish” with support from the text.

The Search for Meaning  The moral, author’s message, or life lesson of a story  Theme in fiction is NOT explicit or literal…  Which leads us to infer using the plot details and character’s actions  Often the author will not tell the reader what the theme is, thus readers must analyze the character’s actions to infer a hidden message Hmm...what does this mean? Theme...What is it?

Where can We find Themes? Themes can be found everywhere: literature, art, stories, movies, etc… The theme of a piece of literature is its view about life and how people behave.

Themes can be...  Stated = expressed directly (from the narrator or through character dialogue)  Implied = revealed gradually through other literary elements such as plot, character, setting, point of view, imagery, figures of speech, or symbolism

The purpose of Theme  An understanding of theme is dependent upon one’s experience of life and literature, yet…  Theme in literature can enlarge one’s understanding of life.  The theme will never completely explain the story, but rather supports all of the other elements in the story.

Theme = universal truth The theme is usually something everyone goes through, a statement or a lesson about life.

The theme often can...  Be determined once the conflict is resolved  Be in a form of a statement  Show what lesson/message about life is important to learn Don’t confuse Theme with Thematic Topic: Jealousy Love Fear Freedom Justice

Examples of Theme Hard work pays off in the end. It is okay to be different from others. Love has the ability to conquer all.

Big World Lessons vs. Small World Details Think beyond the small world elements of the story to extract the big world lesson of the theme.

Example Tim hated his old baseball glove. He wanted to play with a new glove, but he didn’t have any money, so he decided to steal it. But when Tim got caught stealing the glove, his parents said he couldn’t play baseball all summer. Small World--Story Level Interpretation= Tim shouldn't steal Big World Interpretation= If you want something in life, you should work for it

How to determine a Theme Ask yourself, “What is the story teaching?” Use this to help: The main character of the story is ____________. His/Her conflict is ____________. He/She solves this conflict by ______________. OR... He/She does not solve this conflict because he/she does not _________________.

Let’s Practice With your tablemates, self-select which short story to read. As a collaborative group, determine the Theme of each short story. Use the clues to help guide you in your search for the deeper meaning/message from the author. Record your answers on your worksheet.

Wrap-Up On your half-sheet of paper, complete the following: 1.What is the overall theme for “The Third Wish”? 2.Support your answer with details from the text (short story packet)
