The Scientific Revolution

SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION Prior to the age of reason, all answers regarding life were found from either ________ or _________ People did not use _________or____________  The AGE of REASON brings about a willingness to question accepted beliefs.

In the 1500s and 1600s the Scientific Revolution changed the way Europeans looked at the world. People began to make conclusions based on experimentation and observation, instead of merely accepting traditional ideas. The Scientific Revolution

This new theory was proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus GEOCENTRIC THEORY ORIGINAL THEORY Everything revolves around the Earth Earth is immovable HELIOCENTRIC THEORY Challenged the original theory Everything revolves around the sun Sun is immovable (Earth moves)

Then, in the late 1500s, the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe provided evidence that supported Copernicus ’ heliocentric theory. Brahe set up an astronomical observatory. Tycho Brahe Every night for years he carefully observed the sky, accumulating data about the movement of the stars and planets.

After Brahe ’ s death, his assistant, the German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler, used Brahe ’ s data to calculate the orbits of the planets revolving around the sun. Kepler ’ s calculations supported Copernicus ’ heliocentric theory. His calculations also showed that the planets moved in oval shaped orbits, and not perfect circles, as Ptolemy and Copernicus believed. Johannes Kepler Kepler ’ s finding help explain the paths followed by man-made satellites today.

Galileo Galilei Galileo ’ s discoveries caused an uproar. Other scholars came against him because like Copernicus, Galileo was contradicting Ptolemy. The Church came against Galileo because it claimed that the Earth was fixed and unmoving. When threatened with death before the Inquisition in 1633, Galileo recanted his beliefs, even though he knew the Earth moved. Galileo was put under house arrest, and was not allowed to publish his ideas.

GALILEO GALILEI  Invented the telescope  His findings supported Copernicus’s (which completely went against the church)  He kept his findings silent for awhile (why), but finally put them into print…..”The Starry Messenger ”

The pope is angry… summons Galilei to an inquisition Galilei is forced to RECANT (through torture…. burning alive) Galilei eventually gives in and states that the ideas of Copernicus were false

Not even Galileo was safe. The church arrested Galileo For heretical ideas such as heliocentricism. Threatened with torture, he publicly recanted his science and lived his last days under permanent house arrest. Western Christian biblical references Psalm 93:1, Psalm 96:10, and Chronicles 16:30 include text stating that "the world is firmly established, it cannot be moved." In the same tradition, Psalm 104:5 says, "[the LORD] set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved." Further, Ecclesiastes 1:5 states that "the sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises.” This meant that the Idea the earth spun on its axis or revolved around the sun was incompatible with literalist readings of scripture--and many medieval and Renaissance church authorities forbade such teachings.
