Introduction 1. Phil. 4:3 Women labored diligently with Paul 2

Introduction 2. Women serve valuable roles:  Jesus came to save women, they bring souls to him  Jesus commended the faith of women  Women help spread the gospel in many ways  Women serve under the leadership of men  A woman’s godly example is powerful 3

I. Jesus Came to Save Women, They Bring Souls to Him A. Jesus Saved the Woman at Jacob’s Well  Jn. 4:13-14 “Living water” for a Samaritan woman 4

5 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

I. Jesus Came to Save Women, They Bring Souls to Him A. Jesus Saved the Woman at Jacob’s Well  Jn. 4:39 She brought others to Christ 6 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

I. Jesus Came to Save Women, They Bring Souls to Him B. Many Women Follow Him (Men Stubborn)  Acts 16:13-14 Women obeyed at Philippi 7

8 13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

I. Jesus Came to Save Women, They Bring Souls to Him B. Many Women Follow Him (Men Stubborn)  Acts 17:4 Women obeyed at Thessalonica 9

II. Jesus Commended the Faith of Women A. A Woman Anointed Jesus Before His Burial  Mk. 14:3-9 She did more good than she knew 10

 Mk. 14:3-9 She did more good than she knew 11 3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. 4 And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? 5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.

 Mk. 14:3-9 She did more good than she knew 12 6 And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. 7 For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. 8 She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. 9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

II. Jesus Commended the Faith of Women B. A Poor Widow Gave More Than the Rich  Lk. 21:1-4 She gave all: two mites 13

 Lk. 21:1-4 She gave all: two mites 14 1 And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. 2 And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. 3 And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: 4 For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.

IV. Women Serve Under Man’s Leadership A. All of Us Must Serve God in Holiness  1 Tim. 2:8-15 Holy men lead, holy women serve  Vs. 8 Men lead with holy hands 22 8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

IV. Women Serve Under Man’s Leadership A. All of Us Must Serve God in Holiness  1 Tim. 2:8-15 Holy men lead, holy women serve  Vv. 9-10 Holy women dress modestly, do good 23

IV. Women Serve Under Man’s Leadership A. All of Us Must Serve God in Holiness  1 Tim. 2:8-15 Holy men lead, holy women serve  Vv. 11-12 Holy women submit to man’s lead 24

IV. Women Serve Under Man’s Leadership A. All of Us Must Serve God in Holiness  1 Tim. 2:8-15 Holy men lead, holy women serve  Vv. 13-15 Woman’s great sin & great service 25 13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. 15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

IV. Women Serve Under Man’s Leadership B. Confusion Came to Corinth: Women Leading  1 Cor. 11:3-5, 16 Standing to prophesy & pray without the customary veil 26

 1 Cor. 11:3-5, 16 Standing to prophesy & pray without the customary veil 27 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. 5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. 16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

IV. Women Serve Under Man’s Leadership B. Confusion Came to Corinth: Women Leading  1 Cor. 14:27-35 Disruptions included women taking the floor to prophesy, & prophets’ wives interrogating them  Vv. 27-28 Speak in foreign languages one at a time & interpret, or be silent 28

 Vv. 27-28 Speak in foreign languages one at a time & interpret, or be silent 29 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

IV. Women Serve Under Man’s Leadership B. Confusion Came to Corinth: Women Leading  1 Cor. 14:27-35 Disruptions included women taking the floor to prophesy, & prophets’ wives interrogating them  Vv. 29-31 Prophets must not interrupt each other to prophesy: be silent when 1 speaks 30

 Vv. 29-31 Prophets must not interrupt each other to prophesy: be silent when 1 speaks 31 29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. 31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

IV. Women Serve Under Man’s Leadership B. Confusion Came to Corinth: Women Leading  1 Cor. 14:27-35 Disruptions included women taking the floor to prophesy, & prophets’ wives interrogating them  Vv. 32-33 Prophets must control themselves because God wants peace, order, & edification 32

 Vv. 32-33 Prophets must control themselves because God wants peace, order, & edification 33 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

IV. Women Serve Under Man’s Leadership B. Confusion Came to Corinth: Women Leading  1 Cor. 14:27-35 Disruptions included women taking the floor to prophesy, & prophets’ wives interrogating them  Vv. 34-35 Prophetesses must not prophesy, & prophets’ wives not interrogate their husbands 34

 Vv. 34-35 Prophetesses must not prophesy, & prophets’ wives not interrogate their husbands 35 34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. 35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

IV. Women Serve Under Man’s Leadership B. Confusion Came to Corinth: Women Leading  1 Cor. 14:27-35 Disruptions included women taking the floor to prophesy, & prophets’ wives interrogating them  Vv. 35 Prophets’ wives disrupted, not others; other husbands could not settle all questions: uninspired men (12:29), unbelievers (7:16), virgins (7:36), widows (7:39), & visitors (14:23) 36

V. A Woman’s Godly Example Is Powerful A. Godly Women Have Converted People Primarily by the Power of Example  1 Pet. 3:1-5 They have saved stubborn husbands 39

 1 Pet. 3:1-5 They have saved stubborn husbands 40 1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation [behavior, NIV ] of the wives; 2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

 1 Pet. 3:1-5 They have saved stubborn husbands 41 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

V. A Woman’s Godly Example Is Powerful B. Godly Women Are Good Examples to All of Us!  Pleasant demeanor based on faith in God  Faithful under difficult circumstances (widows, wives with unbelieving husbands)  Pure in speech, dress, & conduct 42
