Smarter Balanced Assessments Broadview-Thomson PK-8 Learn a Latte March 17, 2015
2
History of SBAC SBAC = The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Replaces the MSP (formerly known as the WASL) –Part of No Child Left Behind (NCLB)--every state must give a state assessment→ Washington chose SBAC. Based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) which 43 states have adopted –All states must have agreed upon standards under NCLB –Our state has always had standards. The change is that they are now aligned nationally.
3
Smarter Balanced States
4
SBAC Overview A suite of “next-generation” assessments designed to assess the CCSS and accurately measure student progress towards college- and career-readiness The goal: –Teachers and schools have information and tools they need to improve teaching and learning –Students who meet standard on the SBAC summative assessments, should be ready for entry- level, credit-bearing college courses
5
Who and What Are Tested? 3 rd -8 th and 11 th grades (3 rd -8 th tests replace current MSP tests) English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics (writing is embedded in ELA and mathematics) –ELA includes literary and informational reading, foundational reading skillls, writing, research, and speaking & listening 5 th and 8 th grade science MSP tests will continue 10 th grade reading, writing, and math assessments will still be used as part of graduation requirements until 2019 11 th grade SBAC assessments may become new graduation requirement in 2019
6
Smarter Balanced Format Computer Adaptive Test –Similar to MAP--questions adjust as students answer Writing at all grades – integrated into English Language Arts (ELA) and Math –Quick writes / short answer –Extended writing tasks as part of new performance tasks Listening tasks (students will use headphones)
7
MSP - Out with the Old SBAC – In with the New Grades 3-8 Test Booklet Computer Adaptive Test or CAT delivered on computer. Performance Task or PT - Must have a lesson (approx. 30 min.) taught in the classroom 1-3 days in advance of seeing the PT. PT is delivered on the computer with a 30 minute presentation and then students respond to the task directly on computers. CAT and PT are both parts of Math and ELA Math – All grades Reading – All gradesReading – All grades but combined into English Language Arts/Literacy or ELA
8
MSP - Out with the Old SBAC – In with the New Grades 3-8 Writing – Grades 4 and 7 Writing – All grades but combined into English Language Arts/Literacy or ELA. Only one “prompt” for each grade level similar to MSP but not exactly the same. No listeningListening – All grades but combined into English Language Arts/Literacy or ELA. Headphones required. Science – Grades 5 & 8 – SameNo science School Test Coordinator Training focused on protocol for proctors and coding of booklets. School Test Coordinator Training focused on Online Management Tool (similar to online MSP) and protocol and logistics – tickets/login/student navigation of embedded tools. School-wide schedule? Who proctors?
9
MSP - Out with the Old SBAC – In with the New Grades 3-8 Set district schedule Flexible schedule set by schools within the last 12 weeks of school. District approval required. Will take a lot of building planning for schedule with computers for both CAT and PT. Untimed, but must finish in 1 day. Untimed Scheduled over multiple days for each CAT and PT or in a block schedule: CAT is done in one day PT on another day PT must finish within 5 days of computer presentation CAT will be active after login up to 45 days. Test taking skills - all paper/pencil Test taking skills: 1.To use embedded tools – practice tests are online 2.Keyboarding skills
10
Skills Needed to Succeed Reading Math Listening skills (will use headphones) Writing at a keyboard (including composing and editing) Technology skills: click and drag, highlight with cursor, scroll boxes in multiple windows, resizing windows, using cursor to insert text in specific field, copy and paste, undo/redo, and many test-specific tools. Perseverance
11
ELA Item Types MC – Multiple choice, single correct response MS – Multiple choice, multiple correct responses EBSR – Evidence-based selected response ST/CR – Short text/Constructed response WR/CR – Written response/Constructed response – Only found in select writing standards HT – Hot text: select text and reorder text MA – Matching tables ( item type in development) 11
12
Math Item Types MC – Multiple choice, single correct response MS – Multiple choice, multiple correct responses EQ – Equation/Numeric TI – Fill-in tables DD – Drag and drop ST – Short text – SBAC now limits to specific targets within claims 3 and 4 – Grades 5+ only G – Graphing MA – Matching tables* HS – Hot spot* GI – Graphing interaction* 12

Performance Tasks Significant change from MSP: Performance tasks in both ELA and math A set of complex questions on a particular theme or scenario Designed to measure skills (depth of understanding, research, etc.) difficult to measure with traditional item types Goal of Performance Tasks: –“To measure students’ ability to integrate skills and knowledge across standards” with real-world writing, research, and analytical skills 25
26
Performance Task Outline 1.Teachers do a scripted classroom lesson –Approx. 20-30 minutes –Provides background knowledge for students on topic/theme of task 2.Student performance task –Part 1: Students do reading, research, and answer questions (ELA & Math) –Part 2: An extended writing task (ELA only) –Writing (3 rd -5 th ): Opinion, narrative or explanatory –Writing (6 th -11 th ): Explanatory or argumentative 26
27
Performance Task: ( Grade 4 Example) Part 1 (35 minutes) Your task You will read an article and watch a video about what animals do to defend themselves from danger. Then you will answer three questions about what you have learned. In Part 2, you will write an article that explains how some animals defend themselves. Directions for beginning You will now examine two sources. Take notes on both sources… Research Questions After examining the research sources, use the remaining time to answer three questions about them… 27
28
Performance Task: ( Grade 4 Example) Part 2 (70 minutes) You will now have 70 minutes to review your notes and sources, plan, draft, and revise your article. You may use your notes and refer to the sources. You may also refer to the answers you wrote to questions in Part 1… Your Assignment Your class is preparing a museum display that will include photos of a variety of animals and interesting facts about them. You have been asked to write an article for the museum display explaining about animal defenses… 28

Scoring SBAC expects to see fewer students meet standard this year as we transition. Data from new York: This year’s scores will be viewed as a new baseline that will help our teachers measure future growth.
30
How are these scores used? At 3 rd -8 th grade level, SBAC provides teachers and schools with data on student achievement Helps schools identify students that may need extra support or acceleration Provides feedback on how teachers are teaching and how students are learning Students who have Spectrum status remain in that category until graduation unless parents request students to be exited. SBAC results have no bearing on this at all. By 2019, all 11th graders are required to pass the SBAC in Math and ELA to be eligible to graduate with a traditional diploma
31
Scheduling Testing window at BT is March 30 th -May 29 th Roughly 4 hours per subject area, the same as MSP Testing in the computer labs and using brand new laptop carts from the district The test is not timed, so students can take as much time as they need 3 rd Grade Conferences: Smarter Balanced assessments begin in third grade, and we are keeping an especially close eye on our third-graders’ literacy development. For this reason, most third-graders with a Level 1 score (out of four levels) on the English language arts assessment will be have a scheduled time for families to meet with staff before the end of the year.
32
How are BT teachers preparing? Teachers are teaching to the standards, and the test is standards based. Teachers are responsible for covering all the standards in their grade level Teachers are giving students practice with the format of the test: –explaining math answers in more expanded writing forms –comparing and contrasting two texts –increasing rigor by having students answer higher leveling thinking questions –taking training and practice tests in the computer lab The CCSS and the SBAC are aligned Amplify (mclass Beacon) “Quick Checks” We are teaching the technology skills students need on this test Teachers are exposing students to all depths of knowledge (DOKs) and using DOK question stems to deepen students’ levels of understanding
