Last week - Death Plots - Expensive perfume "wasted" - Jesus rides a holy donkey …and weeps over Jerusalem
4
What does God want From you?
5
- Go to Church - Don't cuss - Be a good person - Do good things - Share that FB Meme
6
What if I told you… Religious Leaders Were even better than that And Jesus declares war On them
7
Only people who are Really changed Can tell about the changes Jesus makes
8
What does God want From you? And… What makes Jesus mad?
9
Jesus ain't "even" Not just love and peace Soft words and warm hugs
10
SO what's it look like for Jesus To have a bad day?
11
Every day…back and forth 2 Miles Luke: "…spent the night on a hill called the Mount of Olives"
12
Every day: "This could be the last… This could be the day they arrest us and kill us" Every.Single.Day
13
Every day… Religious leaders are looking For the right moment Only thing stopping them: He has the crowd's favor
14
Judas will be looking for the Right moment to betray Jesus
15
What do you do when it's 4 Days Before Passover and you're Getting ready to suffer and die?
16
What do you do when it's 4 Days Before Passover and you're Getting ready to suffer and die? Jesus has a fight with a tree (Mark 11)
17
On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it
18
When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs
19
And he said to it, And he said to it,
20
And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it
22
The only time Jesus performs a miracle To destroy something
23
Why is he hungry? And why get angry at a tree That isn't in season?
24
And Jesus said, "Grow figs now, Mr. Tree" And the tree grew figs And Jesus ate and was satisfied As did his disciples
25
He is hungry
26
Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree in its first season, I saw your fathers - Hosea 9:10
27
Israel= Fig Tree God is Looking for fruit (Spiritual life)
28
Leaf out in Spring Produce fruit in Summer
29
There's an illusion
30
But Jesus looking for fruit When he knows it's Not in season
31
And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none (Luke 13)
32
And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none
33
Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’
34
And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure
35
Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down’” - Luke 13:6-9
36
Jesus has been waiting… For years and years He's even given an extra year Of grace
37
Cleansed the Temple At the beginning of His ministry Approx. 3.5 years ago
38
Looks one more time Then curses the tree And walks away
39
Why not force it to produce fruit? He provides the environment For growth
40
It is Israel's job to absorb And produce fruit God's people are in full leaf - They look good - But there's no fruit
41
"'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men'" - Matt. 15:8-9
42
Jesus is angry Because God's people Look good on the outside But it's just an illusion
43
Here's what the Illusion Looks Like (Every day- they want him dead)
44
And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple…
45
…and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons
46
And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple
47
And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’?
48
But you have made it a den of robbers”
49
And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching
50
Truth resonates with people Who are open to it And humble enough To receive
51
And when evening came they went out of the city - Mark 11:15-19
52
Jesus is having a bad day
53
2 nd Time- 3.5 years earlier Fig Tree- given 3 years+ grace Temple had been cleansed But still no fruit
54
Outer Court: Court of the Gentiles Israel: Come and see House of prayer for all nations Turning away people God loves
55
So Jesus is angry And judgment is coming
56
What's makes Jesus angry? Looking good outwardly But fruitless And anything that keeps people From knowing God
57
Judgment is coming Does Jesus want it?
58
Judgment is coming Does Jesus want it? No. Wept over it
59
But people coming to Faith Is more important Than their comfort or desire To do things their way
60
Israel: Come and see Church: Go and say
61
"We train disciples to change their world for Jesus by Teaching the Scriptures for real life-change…
62
…and intentionally creating opportunities for Community, Prayer and Worship so that God will be glorified and people will become whole"
63
Because we want people to Know this King who died for them And only people who are changed Can tell about the changes Jesus makes
64
As Jesus reaches the Outer Courts reserved for Gentiles Musty stench, Sound of animals Noise of moneychangers
65
Filled with anger Drives out sellers and buyers Overturns tables and seats Refuses to allow travel through Calls them "robbers"
66
Jesus didn't tell anyone To leave He drove them out Stopped people carrying goods From city to Mt. of Olives
67
Dachsund chasing a Doberman
68
My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations Gotta underline the "all" To understand why he's so angry
69
Hang on…we'll get there Injustice: Moneychangers Cheating people Change Roman for Tyrian So they could pay the temple tax
70
Roman: 80% Silver Tyrian: 94% Silver But they shorted people (Judas was paid in Tyrian)
71
Moneychangers charged For the service Concert "Convenience Fee" With permission of Chief Priests Who got a kickback
72
Animals declared unsatisfactory So new ones had to be bought Corruption Jesus is directly challenging The Chief Priests
73
Injustice- God hates it Half-hearted sacrifices Supposed to bring best animals If couldn't…buy them Now…whatever is convenient
74
It's about getting it done So they can go back to life Rather than worshiping, Knowing that everything Comes from God and is God's
75
People God loves are displaced For the sake of profit And convenience House of prayer for all nations
76
Smell, noise, foot traffic The whole purpose of the Jews Was to be light, reflecting God's glory so the nations Would see. And want their God
77
And Gentiles can't seek God In his Temple
78
Jesus is consumed He's beyond upset Cleanses the Temple yet again And then goes home at night
79
3 Days before Passover As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots
80
And Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God
81
Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea…’
82
…and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him
83
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours
84
And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone…
85
…so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses” - Mark 11:20-26
86
"Jesus, that tree is wasted… Tore up!" "Have faith in God. You can move mountains. Pray. And really believe"
87
Huh? Jesus cursed the fig tree Because their was no fruit
88
Jesus…I want fruitfulness Takes real faith and real prayer And prayer is only effective if You're on praying ground So check your heart and forgive
89
Fruit Can't be ritual- just to do it Can’t be religion- looking good Must be real, active, living Transparent, praying and Believing faith
90
Only people who are Really changed Can tell about the changes Jesus makes
91
Fruit isn't something we effort It's the result of God's work In our lives take in spiritual nourishment and submit to God
92
What does God want From you? Let it be more than illusion Transparency, open to Him Willing to grow
93
Not just convenience Not just looking good But carrying to cross to put Jesus first in all things
94
Only people who are Really changed Can tell about the changes Jesus makes
95
