Amazing Bats! BY TYLER OSIKA

The Amazing Bats  Look at them go, flying around! Those are bats. Bats are very unique animals.

Physical Appearance  To begin with, bats look like a flying bird with fur. These animals have fur that can be black, white, gray, red, or brown. Bats use their wings to fly around. They also have ears to hear and a nose to smell. A lot of bats are 3 inches long ( 7.5 centimeters). Like us, bats have fingers including a thumb. These amazing creatures even have a tail and a body. These animals have very light bones. Bats have many features to their appearances.

Lifespan  Did you know that bats have lived for 50 million years? They have lived longer than humans! These creatures live from 15 – 25 years.

Habitat  Bats almost live everywhere! Although, they don’t live in frigid polar regions. Bats live in tropical forests, deserts, woodlands, fields, and large cities. They can also live in caves, attics, barns, and tall trees. Some choose to live in dark nooks, and crannies. When it’s cold, bats migrate. Bats almost live worldwide.

Diet  Bats eat a lot of insects. Surprisingly, bats can eat other types of bats. These creatures eat moths, flies, mosquitoes, beetles, flying ants, and dragon flies. They also eat small fish, small frogs, nectar, and mice. Bats are actually omnivores because they eat ripe fruit. Catching their prey can take a while for them. These animals rely on echolocation.

Predators  Bats have very few predators. For example, hawks and falcons along with raccoons, skunk, weasels, bobcats, and opossums can all be a threat by entering a bats cave and they would not hesitate to catch a bat. Sometimes owls can be a predator and snakes can be a real threat, too. When bats are babies, they can fall and can be caught. Bats have different kinds of predators.

Unique Facts  Did you know that bats sleep upside down? They sleep in the day and come out in the night. However, even though bats are used to the night, they can see better in the light than the dark. These animals use echolocation to locate a moth. Most bats have poor vision. Finally, bats are the second largest groups of mammals in the whole entire world!

Conclusion  I hope you learned a lot of interesting facts about the amazing bats.
