1
Magnetic Poles – regions of magnets that produce magnetic forces - Magnets have a north and a south pole - the same poles (north and north or south and south) repel each other - opposite magnetic poles attract each other - the closer the poles get the stronger the force between them will be
2
Every magnet must have a north and a south pole. If you break a magnet each half piece will still have a north and south pole. - this is true no matter how many times you break the magnet
3
There is a space around a magnet where the magnetic attraction between the north and south poles is still felt. - this is called a magnetic field - the direction of the magnetic field outside a magnet is from north to south http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0qwmE03J 3A&feature=related
4
Magnetic fields are caused by the motion of electric charge. Every object that has an electric field will also have a magnetic field. If this is true, how does a bar magnet setting in one place have a magnetic field? Where is the moving electric charge? - in the spinning electrons inside of the atoms that make up the magnet
5
Magnetic Domains – clusters of aligned atoms in a sample - the atoms in a sample can be organized so that a north pole appears on one end and the south pole appears on the other.
6
An electric current produces a magnetic field. If you coil a wire that is carrying a current many times you will make a electromagnet.
7
If you push a charged particle through a magnetic field it will get deflected if the charged particle is not moving with the magnetic field lines The Earth’s magnetic field deflects a lot of cosmic radiation.
8
Wires that carry electric current can also be deflected by a magnetic field. - It is this push that the magnetic field puts on a wire carrying a current that is used in electric motors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXpNtPxuk iQ
9
- Direction (i.e. in a compass) - In meters that measure volts and current - In electric motors
10
The Earth has a magnetic field because the center of the Earth is made of molten metal. As the Earth spins and moves around the Sun the metal core also moves creating a magnetic field.
11
You can make electric current by moving a magnet in and out of a wire coil. - The the more wire coils you have the more current will be generated.
12
You can create more voltage from wires and magnets if; - You have more coils of wire that the magnet is moving through - You have thicker wires - You move the magnet through the wires faster
