2 BIRD WS / 2 Workshop on Future Internet: Business Innovation and Regulation Challenges 2008  Scope of the Workshop Address impact of Society, Business, and Governance & Regulation on success of Future Internet Any new technology, no matter how excellent, can only succeed in the market if it satisfies the needs of current or potential future users When Internet, telecommunications and M2M communications merge towards the Networks of the Future the required minimum set of regulatory constraints must be defined Research on networking technologies for the Future Internet needs to be accompanied by research on the context of its intended usage Outline the non-technical areas in the context of Future Internet technologies Enable discussion on non-technical driver results with an external audience  Industry, operators, public authorities and academia speakers cover technical as well as non-technical areas

3 BIRD WS / 3 Workshop on Future Internet: Business Innovation and Regulation Challenges 2008  Study on impact of non-technical drivers covers Society aspects Mobility aspects, reachability, virtual environments, less pollution Need for security and balance between privacy and sharing Business aspects Market opportunities, opening of new markets Business models and value chains, new players Policy, Governance and Regulation aspects impact of existing regulations, e.g. legal interception non-discriminatory access to network resources and service providers, impact of hypothetical regulations on the future Internet

4 BIRD WS / 4 Workshop on Future Internet: Business Innovation and Regulation Challenges 2008  Innovation Challenges (1) Economic and business models Viable business models needed for a successful introduction of 4WARD technical innovations Find effective ways for transfer of results from Clean Slate "Future IP" approach into real IP world Create new and extend existing business models considering –New markets, new roles for traditional or new business players –New forms of revenues and savings –Reduction of social costs (less travelling, green technologies, …) Speed up commercial exploitation of the new network systems by elaborating the dynamics in the relations amongst –New technologies –Socio-economic requirements –Government and regulation constraints –Existing and new business models
