Theme for half term that involves the whole school community Theme and materials introduced in staff meeting Initial assembly from theme overview Curriculum work at different levels Silver set groups take place to support pupils who would benefit Gold set (homework activities) are sent home Family SEAL workshops take place Celebration assembly Follow up staff meeting review and sharing of practice

Behaviour & Attendance Strategy for Manchester Children’s Services New beginnings This theme focuses on developing children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in four key social and emotional aspects of learning: Empathy Self awareness Social skills Motivation

Behaviour & Attendance Strategy for Manchester Children’s Services Key concepts of this theme The theme offers children the opportunity to see themselves as valued individuals within a community, and to contribute to shaping a welcoming, safe and fair learning community for all Throughout the theme, children explore feelings of happiness and excitement, sadness, anxiety and fearfulness, while learning (and putting into practice) shared models for ‘calming down’ and ‘problem solving’

Behaviour & Attendance Strategy for Manchester Children’s Services Points to note A focus on feelings such as happy, sad and fearful may potentially give rise to a number of sensitive issues - See the Guidance booklet from the whole- school SEAL resource: Appendix 3 ‘Guidance on the teaching of potentially sensitive and controversial issues’

Behaviour & Attendance Strategy for Manchester Children’s Services Whole school focus Using the schools usual means of celebration (praise, notes to the child and parent / carers, certificates, peer nominations, etc.) to notice and celebrate children (or adults) who were observed: Week 1:Making someone feel welcome Week 2:Doing something brave – overcoming feelings of fearfulness Week 3:Solving a problem / remembering to use the problem solving process Week 4: Calming down / helping someone to calm down

Behaviour & Attendance Strategy for Manchester Children’s Services Activity: Belonging Individually consider a time when you have believed that you haven’t belonged or been valued and think of how it made you feel. You may want to share the situation with the group or keep your thoughts to yourself. In your group, using the paper provided: - Write down, in the small circle, any words to describe your feelings in the situation - Write down, in the middle circle, any words to describe how you or others might behave when they have these feelings - Finally, write in the outer circle, how these behaviours might impact on your learning or areas of work

What the timetable looks like? How will learners learn? How is it made a happy and friendly place to be? How is it made suitable for everyone?

Behaviour & Attendance Strategy for Manchester Children’s Services Activity: Dream school Further development of this activity could include: Completing a staff room charter, listing the rights of those who use the staff room (how we want our staff room to be) and the responsibilities (the things we will try to do and the ways we will try to behave Lunchtime organisers could work with the school council and representatives of the teaching staff to make a playground charter

Behaviour & Attendance Strategy for Manchester Children’s Services Activity: Being new Further development of this activity could include: Interviews with the newest members of staff to identify what made them feel welcomed Keeping the list of ideas generated from discussions and review at the end of the school’s work on ‘New beginnings’ Consider what changes you may want to make to improve school systems and practice

Behaviour & Attendance Strategy for Manchester Children’s Services Further support Theme 1 ‘New beginnings’ contains work with children on establishing classroom charters, rules and routines. To support this, you may find it useful to look at 2 of the CPD sessions from the Primary National Strategy materials: -‘Setting expectations and teaching positive behaviour’ (DfES 0491-2004) -‘Effective lessons and behaviour for learning’ (DfES 0493-2004)
