New England Colonies Small Subsistence Farming - Everyone in family worked Small Businesses

New England Cont…. Shipbuilding was a vital industry. - Built from forests in New England Fishing -Cod, Halibut, Crabs, Oysters, and Lobsters Trade with Colonies, Europe, and West Indies

Farming -Enjoyed fertile soil (Cash Crops and Large Farms). -Farmers sent cargoes to New York City and Philadelphia. -Breadbasket of America (Wheat and Livestock). Most Industrial of the three

Little to no industries Farming (Large Harvest) -Cash Crops (Tobacco and Rice) -Built large plantations to produce large harvests. -Work was very strenuous (Relied on Slave Labor).

Slavery Slave Codes -Strict rules governing punishment and behavior of slaves. Living Conditions - Worked from sunrise to sunset. -Often separated from loved ones. -Bare ground, huddled by the dozen in small rooms.

Family Roles Men were head of household and expected to work A Woman’s place was at home and helping her husband. Children were expected to help with work by age 11-12. Most could hunt by age 10. Large Families of 4-6 kids was common. Strict Rules

Education Taught Religion (Main Reason) Schoolhouse were small. Taught children Grammar and math Very strict rules First Colleges-Harvard and William and Mary College.

Ben Franklin Newspaper and publication of Poor Richard’s Almanac made him wealthy. Created first fire dept. Library, academy that became University of PA. Believer in Colonial Unity and Independence Inventor-Scientist (Proved lighting was a form of electricity, bifocals).

French and Indian War Conflicts in the Ohio River Valley over fur trade (profitable). French considered this territory their own. Britain and France began building and attacking forts in the Ohio Valley.

Effects of French And Indian War George Washington gain Military Experience Britain would face large debts. Britain was not happy that Colonies didn’t give more support. (Larger Role in Colonies). Led to expansion of British Colonies and territory. Proclamation of 1763 issued.
