Characteristics = Traits A characteristic of an organism may be inherited or acquired. You are a unique individual. Characteristics about you are called traits. Examples: Eye color, basketball skills

Types of Traits A characteristic of an organism may be or Acquired Inherited
7
Inherited Traits Inherited traits are coded in your DNA You received from you biological parents Examples: eye color, hair color, height, blood type, birds flying south for the winter Because inherited traits are coded in the DNA, they can be passed on to the next generation
8
Acquired Traits Acquired traits develop during life (organism is not born with it) Not in your DNA Examples Things you learned (riding a bike, reading, writing) Things that happened to you (short hair, broken bone, pierced ears, tattoos)
9
Acquired traits end with you! Acquired traits cannot be passed on to offspring Organisms develop acquired traits They are NOT in DNA/genes! Example: This dog’s puppies won’t be missing a leg just because he is! Three legged dog
10
Lets practice…. Remember Inherited traits are passed down by your parents, they are in your DNA Acquired traits are learned or happen to you, they are not in your DNA

Now complete the exit ticket! Fun (weird) fact Epidermodysplasia verruciformis is an extremely rare disorder that makes people prone to widespread human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This infection causes scaly macules and papules to grow on the hands, feet, and even face. These skin “eruptions” appear as wart- like lesions — and even wood-like and horn-like growths — with reddish- brown pigmented plaques.
