T32 Overview Definition Essential websites Application: Tables & Timeline

T32 grants: What do they support? research training experiences predoctoral, postdoctoral, and short-term trainees specified areas of biomedical, behavioral and clinical research

T32 grants: Whom do they support? U.S. citizens permanent residents of the U.S.

T32 grants: How do they operate? institutional awards (not individual fellowships) Program director applies on behalf of group of faculty trainers. internal review process to award “slots” to individual trainees

T32 grants: How do you know if you should apply? All Applicants (new and renewal): PI: Call the Program Officer of your current or prospective Institute. Discuss: your grant + mission of the NIH institute = good fit? Does the Institute have unique policies, requirements, application tables/forms?

T32 grants: How do you know if you should apply? New T32 applicants: Your trainers must be unique group of faculty representing area not covered by any other T32 on campus. Review the campus T32 list and contact colleagues with questions: UW T32 list: http://www.grad.wisc.edu/research/traininggrants/nihtra ining.html UW T32 list: http://www.grad.wisc.edu/research/traininggrants/nihtra ining.html

Recommended Timeline At least 5 months prior to deadline, determine faculty trainer list & review information available in the T32 database to determine what additional data you must collect from faculty trainers. Enter new information and updates into the T32 database as you collect it.

Recommended Timeline: Renewals For renewal applications, at least three months prior to deadline request current trainee research descriptions and publication lists and gather trainee history data.

Recommended Timeline: Interdept Grants For interdepartmental training grants, at least two months prior to deadline request departmental data (information on applicant pool, current positions of past trainees).

Recommended Timeline: Review & Approval Contact Dean’s Office for budget review during the month prior to the deadline. Ask Dean’s Office for preferred timeline for routing Cayuse application and WISPER record.

Other Timeline Tips Check the T32 database to see what data is already available. For large grants, try to get extra help with data entry for the 8 weeks prior to deadline.

Creating a Budget - Stipends Current rates posted on NIH website: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice- files/NOT-OD-12-033.html http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice- files/NOT-OD-12-033.html (FY12 rates still applicable per NOT-OD-13-064) Predoctoral $22,032 Postdoctoral Years of Experience 0 $39,264 1 $41,364 2 $44,340 3 $46,092 4 $47,820 5 $49,884 6 $51,582 7 or more $54,180

Tuition & Seg. Fees: Sample Calculations

Creating a Budget Trainee Travel – Check with your awarding component for their policy on this category Training Related Expenses including Health Insurance Training Related Expenses: Funds to help defray expenses including staff salaries, equipment, and supplies. Request $2,200 per predoc and $3,850 per postdoc. Health Insurance: Current rates are available at https://www.rsp.wisc.edu/rates/index.html. Predoc Trainees: 24.2% Postdoc Fellows/Trainees: 14.5% Request actual costs and budget future year increases. NIH will limit the amount awarded to $2,000 per predoctoral trainee and $4,000 per postdoctoral trainee

Training Related Expenses Calculation Per Year Predocs Health Insurance(($22,032 x 25.2%) x 25 slots) = $ 133,434.00 Trainee Related Expenses$2,200 x 25 slots = $ 55,000.00 TOTAL $ 188,434.00 Postdocs Health Insurance [(($39,264 x 15.5%) x 2 slots) + (($41,364 x 15.5%) x 2 slots)] = $ 24,995.00 Trainee Related Expenses $3,850 x 4 slots = $ 15,400.00 TOTAL $ 40,395.00 GRAND TOTAL $ 228,829.00

Creating a Budget Facilities and Administrative Costs (also called indirect costs or overhead) should be requested at a rate of 8% of total direct costs less tuition, fees, and equipment. CategoryCost Stipends $ 712,056 Travel $ 29,000 Training Related Expenses $ 228,829 Tuition and Fees $ 716,809 Total Direct Costs (TDC) $ 1,686,694 Modified Total Direct Costs (MTDC = TDC less Tuition) $ 969,885 Indirect Costs (8% of MTDC) $ 77,591

Cayuse…. Budget – Use the worksheet (it helps!) Check that all Indirect Cost Type fields are set to “MTDC” Change F&A rate to 8% Double check auto calculations Data Tables: Attach Separately! Cayuse will combine them into 1 attachment for you. Key Personnel: DON’T create profiles for anyone else on campus in Cayuse! Request profile permissions instead.

PHS 398 Training Budget, Period 1 Stipends will pull from table within Cayuse

PHS 398 Training Budget, Period 1

PHS 398 Training Budget, Summary and Escalation

Budget Justification Explain how budget numbers were calculated and escalated: Stipend levels used Tuition per trainee per year TRE (fringe rate plus $2200 or $3850/trainee) Indirect costs

Shortfall (your award will not cover the full costs) Predoctoral Trainees Graduate School will cover the tuition, fees, and fringes shortfall on NIH training grants. For details, see memo at http://www.grad.wisc.edu/research/traininggrants/documents/Tuitio nRemissionGraduateFellows61609.final.pdf For each trainee, the Training Related Expenses (TRE) category must still cover at least $2,000 of his or her health insurance costs Postdoctoral Trainees Individual departments/programs are responsible for covering any shortfall. This means departments/programs should save enough TRE to cover health insurance costs for all postdoctoral trainees.

Other Mandated Proposal Sections Training in Responsible Conduct of Research: Frequency and Format Frequency (some NIH Institutes require training every year) On campus courses Bacteriology 901 (Responsible Conduct of Research) Chemistry 901 (Seminar in Scientific Ethics) Horticulture 875 (Intro to Research Ethics) Human Oncology 721 (The Conduct of Science) Various Medical History & Bioethics Medical Physics 471 (Ethics & Responsible Conduct of Research) Nursing 802 (Ethics & Conduct of Research) Oncology 675 (Appropriate Conduct & Effective Comm of Sci) Pharmacy 800 (Research Ethics) Surgical Sciences 812 (Research Ethics and Career Development) Program/Departmental training Seminars/Workshops-on or off campus

Other Considerations Letters of Support Not required Letters may be requested from Graduate School or home school/college to document promised support. Key Personnel Should typically only include PI and co-directors. Biosketches Use standard NIH biosketch including the personal statement-with statement relevant to training history Biosketches for faculty key personnel will appear twice. Once under key personnel and a second time in the participating faculty biosketch section. Be sure all NIH funded publications complies with NIH Public Access Policy (PMCIDs) listed in biosketches Appendix may include samples of materials referred to in the text.

Regulatory Compliance Financial Conflict of Interest The Program Director must complete a disclosure form prior to submission of the application http://www.rsp.wisc.edu/coi/index.html Human Subjects/Biological Materials/Vertebrate Animals/Human Embryonic Stem Cells Updated procedures are available on the T32 web site http://www.grad.wisc.edu/research/traininggrants/animalhumanbiol.html

Regulatory Compliance- PLuS Database UW protocol numbers are listed in the PLuS (Protocol Lookup System), a database developed by the Graduate School. To request access to this database, contact Heather McFadden (hnmcfadden@grad.wisc.edu) in the Graduate School's Office of Research Policy. This database will provide you with protocol numbers and approval dates for your PIs. You may use this resource, as well as communication with your trainers to determine the list of protocol details to be provided to NIH and entered in WISPER.

Regulatory Compliance–Human Subjects If Human Subjects are used in any of the research related to the training grant, the Program Director must complete the Human Subjects training module http://www.grad.wisc.edu/hrpp/10222.htm Any trainers and trainees involved should also complete the training module.

Regulatory Compliance Human Subjects/Biological Safety/Vertebrate Animals/Human Embryonic Stem Cells Umbrella protocols should no longer be used. In the WISPER record, check "Yes" for those clearances that are applicable. You can either list protocols associated with the training grant at this point or wait until the time of award. If you wish to list the protocols at this time, create a table in Microsoft Excel and upload it as an attachment to WISPER. Biosafety is required, but is for internal use.

The WISPER Record For document type, choose NIH Train. Pick submission method as Cayuse. No need to attach any 424 forms to record although your Dean’s office may want to attach an excel spreadsheet on your budget calculations. Route record per usual.
