What is a small learning community? Small teams of teachers focused on student learning creating opportunities for personalized learning. Frequent communication for immediate academic and social-emotional intervention.

9 th Grade Academy (a small learning community) Increased graduation and attendance rates Decrease in behavioral referrals Transformation begins: students explore strengths, interests, career paths, and college opportunities Building resilience through staff involvement, support, and monitoring Student goal setting and monitoring of goal achievement: Behavioral and academic Intentional effort to develop confidence in organizational skills and focus Building relationships with every student and teacher Encouraging mentorships between freshman and upperclassmen through Link Crew

WHAT IS A CAREER ACADEMY? Students will choose an academy (small learning community) based on their interests and strengths They will take classes with other students with similar interests under an umbrella of related career fields Teachers will work together in small learning communities to form relationships with all students in their academy They will share the skills and concepts necessary for success in the career fields related to their academy, leading to integration of these within all subjects This will result in students understanding the relevance of all course work as teachers relate what they teach to skills necessary in these careers Project based learning, a vital strategy in the academy model, will lead to motivated and self directed learners; ready to pursue their dream following graduation
