WHAT IS UNIVERSAL DESIGN? Universal Design Def.- A philosophy of designing interiors and products to accommodate all people with a variety of requirements, needs and abilities Universal Design meets the needs for people of different sizes, ages and abilities

ASPECTS OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN Barrier-free Design Def.- Living spaces designed without any structures that would prevent access by people with special needs Adaptable Design Def.- Design features that are temporary and can be easily changed Ex.- Installing a wheelchair ramp that can later be removed

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR THE HOME Kitchen Varied counter heights Knee space under sink and cook tops Pull out shelves Contrasting cabinet knob colors Easy access to appliances and faucets Bathroom Grab bars in the tub or shower Grab bars around the toilet Single lever controls for sinks Open space to turn around Knee space under sink
