M&M Activity All students must wash hands well Take a bag Write Name on bag Each student will blindly trade one M&M with another student a MINIMUM of three times Sign the names of the bags that you trade with Students can trade with more than three if desired Sit and pour out M&M’s in bag, being careful not to mix with other students

Remove one STD for every condom that was used during sexual intercourse How many times did you engage? How many times were protected? Stand up for each STD…

What is the best contraceptive that is used to prevent contracting an STD? Only 35% of teens 13-19 use a condom every time they have sex.

S.T.D. Statistics in Teens More than half of all people will have an STD at some point in their lifetime. The estimated total number of people living in the US with a viral STD is over 65 million. Every year, there are at least 19 million new cases of STDs, some of which are curable. Less than half of adults ages 18 to 44 have ever been tested for an STD other than HIV/AIDS. Each year, one in four teens contracts an STD. One in two sexually active persons will contact an STD by age 25.

S.T.D.s for Boys Syphilis: Primary syphilis infections are characterized by sores on genitals, rectum, tongue or lips; secondary infections are characterized by body rash (especially on hands and feet), fever, headache and soreness of joints. Each year, there are an estimated 70,000 new cases of syphilis.

S.T.D.s for Boys Chlamydia: Number 1 S.T.D. in the United States. One may not experience symptoms however discharge from penis and pain and swelling around testicles. Each year, there are almost 3 million new cases of Chlamydia, half of which are in adolescents and young adults. Genital herpes: One in 5 sexually active Americans has contracted herpes virus. 1.6 million new infections each year, some estimates suggest that by 2025 up to 40% of all men could be infected. Symptoms show immediately to 3 weeks, include blisters which burst into ulcers on the penis followed by fevers and muscle soreness.

Human Papilloma Virus(HPV): causes genital warts, esophageal cancers, and oral cancer in males. HIV/AIDS: HIV is a virus which eventually causes AIDS. HIV destroys your immune system by destroying white blood cells. 40,000 -80,000 new cases of HIV are reported each year in the U.S. Half of all new infections are among people younger than 25. Adolescents have one of the fastest increasing rates of HIV infection; averages of two young people under 25 are infected with HIV every hour of every day. S.T.D.s for Boys

S.T.D.s in Girls Syphilis: starts as a sore on the mouth, vagina, or rectum, a rash may then appear, more serious symptoms can occur such as blindness, numbness or death. (closely related to males) Primary syphilis infections are characterized by sores on genitals, rectum, tongue or lips; secondary infections are characterized by body rash (especially on hands and feet), fever, headache, soreness of joints or even death. Each year, there are an estimated 70,000 new cases of syphilis. Gonorrhea: women may not experience any symptoms however they include, frequent itching and yellow discharge from the vagina. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease may follow itching and can lead to sterility and surgery is required in severe cases.

S.T.D.s in Girls Chlamydia: symptoms are not common however some do experience severe stomach pain and vaginal discharge. Can also cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. The CDC recommends that sexually active females 25 and under should be screened at least once a year for Chlamydia, even if no symptoms are present. Genital Herpes: One in 5 sexually active Americans has contracted herpes virus. 1.6 million new infections each year, some estimates suggest that by 2025 up to 50% of all women could be infected. Indications usually show 2- 20 days. After contact, blisters appear on labia and in cervix, fever and headaches. A women’s period may cause an arrival of the disease.

S.T.D.s in Girls Hu man Papillomavirus(HPV): includes over 100 viruses which can cause warts and cancer in women. 1 in ever 2 sexually active young woman can be infected. You can prevent this disease by not having sexual contact and by only having one partner, however you can also prevent yourself by getting the Gardasil and Cervarix vaccinations. Over 6 million people acquire HPV each year, and by age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have acquired genital HPV infection. Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms. Some researchers believe that HPV infections may self-resolve and may not be lifelong like herpes.

S.T.D.s in Girls HIV/AIDS: 40,000 -80,000 new cases of HIV are reported each year in the U.S. Half of all new infections are among people younger than 25.
