Evaluation and Research at Brighton Aim: to identify ways in which PASS has influenced: – student engagement, attainment & retention at the UoB – possible differences in findings when comparing WP and non-WP students, age and gender Methods: – Quantitatively and qualitatively analysed data from a survey exploring attendees’ experiences of PASS sessions (2012/13) – Conducted statistical analysis of PASS session attendance in relation to mid-year attainment grade data for first year students in the School of Applied Social Science (2012/13) – Statistically analysed progression and retention data for PASS attendees in relation to non-attendees in Brighton Business School (BBS) and Pharmacy and Bio-molecular Sciences (2011/12)

19. Evaluation and Research at Brighton Findings: Overall the survey results (N=182) show that PASS session attendance is beneficial for student engagement. Relationship between PASS attendance and increased student confidence and motivation PASS attendees were more likely to achieve higher grades than PASS non-attendees PASS may be associated with lower non-continuation rates for some students (young and male students) but it is not conclusive across all student groups

I found the PASS sessions very useful and insightful, having past students of the same course leading the sessions was particularly beneficial.” 1 st yr Social Policy student

My role as a PASS Leader has allowed me to explore and meet people at various Brighton campuses prior to attending in September 2011, smoothing the transition.” “PASS relates to the facilitation of learning. Becoming a PASS leader has given me strength in communicating with and directing a group of students. This has led me to consider the possibility of teaching and gaining a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. ”

25. SU Excellence Nominations: PASS Leader Award “Naz and Priyanka have been excellent PASS leaders this year, from supporting us with our studies to getting to know us all individually. They have been great at informing us all of upcoming PASS sessions (their location, times and what modules they'll be covering). They have aided us with our studies when we have been confused and have pointed us in the direction of useful resources which may explain things a little better. In the first few weeks of uni they helped us to get to know the campus and were able to answer any of our questions, either about the university itself or about student life and coping with being away from home. At Christmas, we had a fun little party with food and games which was a nice breather from the work! When helping us with our studies, they always find new and inventive ways of keeping us focused such as countdown, team games and research tasks. Whenever I pass Priyanka around uni, she never fails to wave or come over and say hello - this really helped us all to feel comfortable and integrate ourselves into the uni. Naz and Priyanka really are dedicated PASS leaders and no amount of effort is too great for them, they'd go to any lengths to help us. Because of this, I'd love to be able to thank them with an Excellence Award this year.”

26. SU Excellence Nominations: PASS Leader Award “George and Kurt have gone above and beyond their roles as PASS leaders. Not only were the PASS sessions informative and helpful, they were undoubtedly an integral part of assimilating into student life. This may not necessarily mean that my grades will be higher than they would be otherwise, but it was really nice to see friendly faces around the university. They would always smile and say hello, ask how things were going and if I could suggest content to cover in our sessions that would be relevant to what we were doing in our modules. The impact of this was that I felt more engaged with my studies and could approach any problematic areas proactively and with support. The sessions were organised and always clearly communicated. I am looking forward to the PASS sessions in the run up to the exams in order to do some extra practise and learn new revision techniques.”
