DO NOW - PRELAB 1.What is neutralization? 2.Write the chemical equation for a reaction between HCl and NaOH. The equation must be balanced for full credit. 3.What is a titration? 4.What is the function of an indicator in a titration? 5.Why do people take antacids?

OBJECTIVE By the end of today’s class you will be able to … Neutralize a base using a titration with a known molarity of acid

GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX: SYMPTOMS Commonly called heartburn Burning sensation in the chest just behind the sternum Pain can rise in the chest and spread to the neck and throat.

GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX: CAUSE The muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter relax and allow chyme to flow into esophagus.

HEART BURN

GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX: CAUSE The muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter relax and allow chyme to flow into esophagus. The esophagus does not have the protective mucus that the stomach does. The acid causes a burning sensation.

TURN AND TALK Based on what you know about acids, what kind of treatment could you think of to alleviate this pain?

HEARTBURN TREATMENT HCl + NaOH  ????

HEARTBURN TREATMENT HCl + NaOH  NaCl + H 2 O

SCIENTIFIC QUESTION Which antacid will neutralize more acid – Gaviscon or the Kroger brand?

EXIT TICKET Describe how you were able to determine the effectiveness of antacids in the lab today. Be sure to mention the procedure used. What is a conclusion you were able to draw from the lab today? What data supports this conclusion?
