The Kyalami track Kyalami has played host to no less than 20 Formula One Grand Prixs. The last, in 1993, was won by Alain Prost. It is still used for domestic Grand Prixs and for F1 testing. The track includes: Twelve corners One chicane Several long straights It boast one infamous long downhill straight – ‘the mineshaft’! Basic track rules ENTERING THE TRACK Enter track at end of pit lane. WATCH OUT FOR OTHER CARS! Always wait for safety marshal to give the all clear. Accelerate once you are safely past turn one. LEAVING THE TRACK Keep to the left of the track. Pit entrance is just before last corner. Raise left hand so other drivers know you are leaving the track. Enter pits SLOWLY! PIT LANE Drive slowly! Braking and the brake point www.fantasticracing.com Brake at or before the brake marker The golden rule at corners is - SLOW IN FAST OUT The most common novice mistake is to enter corners too quickly. The car becomes unstable and will spin If you want good lap times – SLOW IN FAST OUT Brake in a straight line Brake gently at first - then apply more pressure progressively Downshifting Only downshift gears: After braking When in a straight line When you are in full control of the car

The turning-in point www.fantasticracing.com You need to have the car completely stable as you approach the turning-in point. Golden Rule: Slow in fast out!

Taking the apex www.fantasticracing.com APEX Do not ride the kerb. Apply power progressively.

The exit point www.fantasticracing.com EXIT The exit point is crucial. Too much power too early with the wrong line will put you off the track! Do not mount concrete curb on exit.

A good start is of utmost important. You must go through the following steps at the start of every session! First two laps of each session www.fantasticracing.com

Go slowly in the pit lane. When you are first on the track, go slowly and gradually build up speed. The first laps are called ‘sighting’ laps. This is the crucial warm-up period of your session. It warms up the car - Engine, brakes and tyres It warms you up! - Just like any other sport - You need to get used to the speed and feel of the car First two laps of each session www.fantasticracing.com

Too late on braking Not braking in a straight line Downshifting before braking Downshifting when the car is not in control Putting too much power on before the apex Putting too much power on during the exit Not warming up - yourself and/or the car Oil on the track and/or wet track What will cause you to spin or come off the track www.fantasticracing.com

Six-speed sequential gear box Upshifting: Neutral = 0 To access first gear - push forward Second to sixth gear - pull back Downshifting: Push gently forward Clutch and Accelerator Clutch - Use as in a normal car - ‘Dab’ the clutch when changing Accelerator – - On UPSHIFT only and for all changes - Come off quickly but smoothly - Quickly and smoothly back on once shift completed Gear changes www.fantasticracing.com
