4 Introduction cont. In this region, adolescent girls are more vulnerable than boys with the girls having six times chances of being HIV positive as compared to boys. (UNICEF 2002). 5 REFLECTION SHAREFRAME PROCESS Educaids has been in partnership with some local organization namely; ACEM, ADRA, and Livingstonia synod since 2005. The three organisation conducted a pilot survey in Malawi and the outcomes were presented at workshop in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, 2007. It was at Ethiopian workshop where Educaids declared funding to organisation network, to fight SRHR related challenges including HIV/AIDS among the youth. The workshop brought together several organisation and sensitized them to the importance of handling HIV/AIDS related challenges that are faced by youth and children through SRHR perspective. 8 SUMMARY OF NA/SA OUTCOMES BEHAVIOR BEHAVIOR  There is a high percentage of girls involved in love relationships  There is a significant proportion of girls involved in sexual intercourse.  Low usage of contraceptives  Considerable percentage of girls dropping out of school.

9 Summary of SA/NA outcomes. Cont. KNOWLEDGE KNOWLEDGE  There is low knowledge of levels among girls on where to get SRHR information.  Few girls have knowledge on contraceptives. ATTITUDE ATTITUDE  Considerable proportion of girls feel that condoms are not reliable.  Some girls feel that contranceptives are not good for health.

10 Summary of SA/NA outcomes. Cont. SKILLS SKILLS  There is low level of assertiveness NEEDS NEEDS  Adequate SRH information and services  Accessibility to bursary for the needy girls in schools.  Basic school needs e.g. writing materials, notebooks etc.

12 SRHR TARGET GROUPS SCHOOL GOING GIRLS SCHOOL GOING GIRLS  FAWEMA mainly focuses on the school going girls in both primary and secondary schools where most of them are adolescents.  The age range for this group is 8-19.  Adolescence is a stage of transition from childhood to adult hood.  This stage involves biological, cognitive and socialemotional changes.  This is a stage of preparation for adulthood. The future of any society hinges on the effectiveness of this preparation.

13 SRHR target group. Cont.  This stage involves experimenting of oneself. Most adolescents experiment with sex which puts them at risk of contracting STIs including HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancies. SCHOOL DROPOUTS DUE SRHR RELATED ISSUES. 14 SRHR target group. Cont. COMMUNITY LEADERS COMMUNITY LEADERS  this group comprises of the following; village heads, school committee leaders, mother group leaders and other influential people in the communities.  Girls need protection guidance to achieve their goals. The leaders in the societies are therefore targeted for this reason.  if these grouped are well trained they can help to reach a common goal of promoting the girl child education.

17 ORGANISATION APPROACH ON SRHR ISSUES. Due to the nature of the main target group, most adolescent engage in risky sexual activities. 19 Organisation approach on SRHR issues. Cont. To ensure provision SRHR information and services, the organisation has engaged in establishing and training the mother groups in most districts. All this is done to make sure that SRHR challenges are addressed and school dropout rates are reduced, thereby reducing the literacy levels among women in Malawi.
