3. Conflict  Khmer Rouge wanted to reconstruct Cambodia based on the Communist model of China  Wanted a self-sustaining farm based society  Khmer Rouge thought of educated people as threats and murdered them  Religion was banned  Religious officials were killed

4. Conflict pt. 2  Could be killed for knowing a foreign language, wearing glasses, laughing, or crying  No personal relationships or affection  If you escaped murder, you became an unpaid laborer  Laborers worked for food

5. Dates  Lasted from 1975-1979  April 17,1975: Khmer Rouge captured Cambodia’s capital  January 7,1979: Vietnamese overtake capital  1990: Vietnamese troops withdraw from Cambodia  1999: end of the Khmer Rouge after death of leader

6. People  Khmer Rouge  Vietnamese defectors  Cambodian citizens  Minority groups including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai

7. End Result  The Khmer Rouge was overthrown  Those who survived fled to Thailand  Most of the Khmer Rouge members died before they could be put to trial  Those who lived were prosecuted by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia

8. Stats  1.5 million- 3 million people died  About 25% of the population was killed  People who fled to Thailand spread diseases that killed an additional 650,000 people  The Khmer Rouge was in control for 4 years
