14 Remembrance Day Functional Maths Discussion Questions 1.Estimate how many people died in World war one. – 20 million injured and 15 million dead 2.What was the life expectancy of a Junior Officer in WW1. At the start of the war (1914), the life expectancy of a frontline junior officer was 11 days. Over the whole war 1914-1918 it was one month. 3.What was the average age of death? 1.3% were 16 or 17 years old 2.7% were 18 years old 12.7% were 19 years old (By far and away the most dangerous age to be) 8.0% were 20 years old. It was perfectly legal in 1914 to join the British Army at 14 years old. You were issued with a regular number which would stay with you till discharge. You were not supposed to fight till you were 19 years old. That was reduced in 1918 down to 18.5 years.

15 Remembrance Day Functional Maths Task Questions You have been asked by the British Legion to organise the annual Poppy Appeal for Mansfield which has 68,000 residents. 1.You decide to order enough Poppies for 10% of the residents of Mansfield. How many poppies is this? 68,000/10=6,800 poppies 2.Each Poppy costs 2p to buy. How much money do you need to buy the poppies? 6,800 x 0.02 = £136 3.How much would the poppies cost if they were 20p each? 6,800 x 0.2 = £1,360 4.You need volunteers to sell the poppies but each volunteer is only asked to give 2 hours of their time. How many volunteers are needed for an 8 hour stint? 8 / 2 = 4 volunteers 5.You decide to put volunteers in three different locations at the same time. How many volunteers do you need now? 4 volunteers x 3 locations = 12 6.You have made a rota to give the volunteers but it only covers the first Saturday. Compile the rota for week 2 & 3 but make sure each volunteer is at a different location each week. (see next sheet for answers)
