There are different world distribution patterns that centre around farming Examples: Developed vs. Developing Countries Varying Ecosystems (Rain forest, tundra…) DIRECTIONS: -For each of the farming types listed in this slide show, shade in the corresponding area on your world map. *(Note: Some areas will have more than one farming type)

Physical reasons for world distribution of various types of farming 3 1. Subsistence Farming of staples (RED) –occurs in northwestern South America, Central Africa, part of southeast Asia and in Indonesia. It seems to occur in some areas of the tropical rainforest, in Africa’s savanna ( grassland ) and in areas with latosol ( tropical ) soils.

2. Subsistence nomadic herding – (GREEN) occurs in Northern Africa, the Middle East, and western and northern China. These areas are largely deserts. Also occurs in Northern Russia- reindeer herders 4

3. Commercial ranching and stock raising (YELLOW) – occurs in western United States and much of Australia. The ecosystem is largely grassland or desert.

6 4. Small – holding stock raising (ORANGE) occurs in Mexico, South America, southern Africa and central Asia. These areas are largely desert with some temperate grasslands and scrub.

7 5. Non-agricultural land use (BLUE) occurs in Northern North America, Greenland, northern Asia, parts of Chile, patches in Northern Africa and central Australia. Northern areas are largely tundra or boreal forest and southern areas are largely desert with some scrub.
