Career Opportunities in Surveying and Spatial Science at The University of Southern Queensland Australia Associate Professor Kevin McDougall Head, Surveying and Spatial Science University of Southern Queensland

Overview Background of USQ What is Spatial Science - Surveying and GIS Careers in Spatial Science Our Degree Programs Employment Prospects

University of Southern Queensland Profile Established in 1967 Currently 25,000 students Approximately 1500 staff Over 5000 international students from 50 countries

What degrees are available at University. The University of Southern Queensland offers a wide range of Undergraduate and Postgraduate degree courses. Two, three and four year undergraduate degrees Graduate Certificates, Diplomas and Coursework Masters Degrees Research Masters and PhD programs All courses are fully accredited by professional bodies

What is Spatial Science? Both surveying and GIS are part of a new industry called the Spatial Science Industry Spatial information describes the location of objects in the real world and relationships between them.

What is Surveying? Surveying is an exciting career that is responsible for the measurement and mapping of our natural and built environments. Surveyors typically have a mixture of outdoor work and office work which normally involves using “state of the art” computer systems. Surveyors are involved in land development, hydrographic surveying, mine surveying, construction and aerial mapping.

What is GIS? GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems. GIS might be best described as “using digital mapping systems to solve real world problems”. GIS is used for solving a range of problems such as environmental management, land planning, salinity mapping, crop management and in many other areas.
