1 Review Lesson 16 and 17 Fractions CCSS: 3.NF.1 3.NF.2 SFO: I will find equal parts of a whole and name them with fractions. I will name fraction parts with unit fractions. I will use my knowledge of fractions of an area to place fractions on a number line. Teacher Input: - Review that a fraction is a number that represents part of a whole. - Review numerator and denominator. - Have students identify the shaded part of a figure. - Model representing fractions on a number line using a fraction strip. - Have the students model 3/2 using a number line. 2 Fractions Objectives: I will find equal parts of a whole and name them with fractions. I will name fraction parts with unit fractions. I can use my knowledge of fractions of an area to place fractions on a number line. EQ: Why is it important to understand fractions when you are sharing things among multiple people?

3 How Do We Represent Fractions? When we split a whole object into smaller, equal pieces, we are creating fractions. A Fraction is a number that represents a part of a whole. This is 1 whole brownie. If we were to split this brownie into 2 pieces, what would we call one of those pieces? What fraction would represent just one of those pieces?

4 How Do We Represent It? Since the brownie is split into 2 pieces, one of the pieces would be represented with the fraction… Numerator – the number above the line in a fraction that represents how many pieces we are using or considering. Denominator – the number below the line in a fraction that represents how many pieces make up the whole. 1 2 Numerator Denominator 1 2 1 2 (Whenever you have 1 as the numerator, we can call it a unit fraction) OR 1/2

5 Guided Practice What unit fraction names the shaded part of the figure? a.2/4 b.2/3 c.1/3 d.3/3 Hint: Step 1 – The numerator represents the parts shaded. Step 2 – The denominator represent the total amount of parts that made up the whole.

7 0 1 Luis cut a plank of wood into three equal pieces. Each piece is 1/3 of the whole plank. Show 1/3 on a number line. Example Step 1: Draw a number line and match the length from 0 to 1 to a fraction strip. Step 2: Divide the number line into equal parts. Use fraction strips that show thirds. Then draw marks on the number line. 1 0 1 1/3

8 Luis cut a plank of wood into three equal pieces. Each piece is 1/3 of the whole plank. Show 1/3 on a number line. Example Step 3: Show 1/3 on the fraction line by writing the fraction name for that length at the mark and drawing a ring to show the length of 1/3 0 1 1/3 02/33/3

9 0 1 Meg cut a straw into fourths. She used the entire straw in an art project. Write a fraction to represent the total amount of the straw she used. Show your answer on a number line. Guided Practice

10 Show 3/2 on a number line. More than 1 on a Number Line Step 1: Determine how many equal parts you need. The fraction 3/2 has 2 as the denominator. You need to show halves on the number line. Step 2: Divide each whole into 2 equal parts. Step 3: Ring fraction parts. You want to show 3/2, or three halves, so ring 3 parts. Label the lengths with fractions. 0 1 2
