Medicinal Plant Since time immemorial plants have been used for the treatment of various ailments. Even today several important drugs used in the modern system of medicine are obtain from plants. The use of medicinal plants has figured in several ancient manuscript like Rigveda, the Bible the Iliad, the odyssey, the history of Herodotus. As far back as 4000 B.C. the ancient Chinese were using drugs plants. In India, earliest references to medicinal plants appear in Rigveda , written between 3500 and 1600 B.C. In Atharvaveda too, detailed discriptions of several medicinal pants were given . In Ayurveda, definite properties of drugs obtained from plants and their uses have been given in some details. Charaka Samhita and Susruta Samhita are two important works dealing with some 700 medicinal plants of India.

Background India has one of the oldest and richest cultural heritage of using wild plants for treating the physical and mental suffering of humanity. Our country is the birth place of Ayurveda . This indigenous system of medicines thrives on naturally occurring floral diversity collectively referred to as medicinal plants. The growing demand for herbal products in the recent past has led to a quantum jump in the volumes of medicinal plants traded within country .The rising global interest poses a great threat to Ayurvedic system of medicine more than ever before , because of the fact that the natural healing plants are being over extracted to meet the markets demand.

The cultivation of medicinal plants will not only enhance the economy of the farmer and country , but also improve the quality of depleted soil and natural resources. The cultivation will help change in the cultivation practices which will improve the over all fresh water availability, reduce pesticides contamination and restore nutrient cycling . The over all effect shall be on the rehabilitation of degraded eco system. In our country medicinal plants are used for treating the physical and mental suffering of humanity.

Application:- Use as medicines for treating the several physical and mental suffering of humanity. The cultivation of medicinal plants will enhance the economy of farmer and the country. It also improves the quality of depleted soil and natural resources. The cultivation of medicinal plants also reduces pesticides contamination and restores nutrient cycle. - Its cultivation will help change in the cultivation practices which will improve the fresh water availability. - Establishment of sustainable medicinal plants resource base. - Popularization of cultivation and use of Indian medicinal and aromatic plants in the area of local people
