Objectives 1. Explain basic principles for designing efficient kitchens, laundry areas and bathrooms. 2. Compare options for cabinets, countertops and fixtures. 3. Describe considerations in planning electrical, lighting and ventilation systems for these areas. 4. Identify ways to incorporate universal design features in kitchens, laundry areas and bathrooms. 5. Describe guidelines for shopping for appliances.

Planning Kitchens Which meals will usually be prepared? For how many people will food usually be prepared? Will there be more than one cook? Should the kitchen accommodate people with physical limitations? How many appliances need to be stored?

Kitchen Layout Guidelines Make sure that at least two people could work together in the kitchen. Check clearance spaces for opening appliance and cabinet doors and drawers. Counter space by refrigerator – 18 inches Counter space by cooktop – 21 inches Counter space by sink – 24 inches

Kitchen Layout Guidelines Range should not be under a window. Refrigerator should not be next to the cooktop or oven. Refrigerator door should not open up to a wall.

Common Kitchen Layouts Island – a freestanding storage and countertop unit. Peninsula – a countertop that extends out into a room, with one end attached to a wall or cabinet.

Ranges, Cooktops & Ovens Gas or Electric? –Many prefer gas for surface cooking and electric heat for oven cooking.

Types of Ovens Conventional – a conventional oven uses gas or electricity to heat the air in the oven compartment. Convection – a convection oven uses fans to circulate heated air over the food.
