Vehicular Accidents Austin Moyer, Badal Patel, Rachael Plasters
2
What are vehicular accidents? occurs when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, debris, or other stationary obstruction, such as a tree or a pole. Vehicular accidents may result in vehicle damage, injury, and in some cases death,
3
Injuries caused by accidents while in the vehicle vehicular accidents can cause a variety of different injuries, to almost any part of your body. Injuries are dependent on the circumstances of the crash and the severity of the impact. Injuries that can occur are brain and head trauma, spinal and neck strains, internal injuries as well as physiological problems as well
4
Injuries cont. Seatbelts can leave bruises and scrapes on passengers Steering wheel can leave bruises on the head and chest if they come in contact often causing blunt trauma Whiplash can cause neck injuries such as fractures and dislocation as well as spinal cord injures Facial injures caused by steering wheel, airbag, car seats, or shattered glass can range from scrapes and bruises, to laceration and fractures, to dental injures The arms and legs can have bruises and scrapes if they were pressed to one side of the vehicle and they were unable to move, sometimes fracturing or breaking the bone. Internal injures to the organs can be caused by sudden acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle
5
Injury caused by car vs. person impact Pedestrians hurt by cars are one of the most common types of injuries seen The bumper and the hood typically hit the person's legs and hips, meaning broken bones in those areas are very common. Depending on how fast the car is going, the patient can be thrown in the air causing head and internal injuries upon impact injuries to the blood vessels or major tissue damage can possibly lead to amputation The injuries can be complicated, sometimes taking months to recover from. Some people can become permanently disabled due to accidents and never return to their normal lives Living with the knowledge that you killed or badly injured someone even if by accident is an enormous burden to carry.
6
The three collision rule RULE 1: The exterior of the vehicle strikes something consider elements of newton's second law (force is mass times acceleration or deceleration) ask yourself questions such as how heavy was the vehicle? How fast was it traveling? How fast did it stop? First, find out the posted speed limit in the area. Second, look for skid marks on attempts to slow the vehicle. Third, look at the vehicle and find out how old it is. Older vehicles are designed to resist impact forces, and never are ones are made to absorb impact forces
7
RULE 2: everything within the vehicle moves towards point of impact Notice vehicle occupants and injuries form seatbelts or other objects in the vehicle. Find our if the occupants were restrained or not, and where they were sitting Other heavy objects should be noted RULE 3: Everything inside the person’s body strikes the inside of the body Solid organs such as spleen and liver fracture/bleed Hollow organs like stomach rupture Vessels tear Lungs rupture or become punctured
