Preventing Food Waste Through Food Planning
2
Background Information Based on research done by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC): In the U.S. we waste around 40% of all edible food The average American household throws away roughly 20 pounds of food each month which equates to roughly $28 - $43 per month.
4
Background Information Wasting food costs us around $165 billion per year $750 million to dispose of food 25 percent of all freshwater used in the U.S. Watering crops 4 percent of total U.S. oil consumption
5
Where Food Waste Comes From Crops un-harvested because of appearance. Foods mishandled during transport. Large portions and large menus at restaurants. In the household: 40 percent of fresh fish 23 percent of eggs 20 percent of milk Fruits and vegetables Much of household waste is due to plate waste and food spoilage due to over-purchasing.
6
This brings us to the idea behind the project.
7
What We Can Do About It? Shop Wisely Plan meals Use shopping lists Buy only what you need for a short duration Avoid impulse purchases Buy the “funny fruit” Repurpose leftovers into something new Use the freezer to keep food longer Learn when foods go bad “Sell-by” and “use-by” dates
8
How much should it cost? According to a report published in USA Today (2013), it costs between $145 and $300 per week to feed the average family of 4. For the purposes of this project, you will be attempting to put together a 1-week food plan for a family of 4 for $240.
