Welcome ‘National Paralympic Day’ takes place on Monday 7 September 2015 and this year, it also officially marks the ‘1 year to go’ milestone ahead of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Our New Zealand Paralympians are aiming for 18 medals at these Games, including 12 Gold. To celebrate this key milestone, Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) will launch its new awareness and fundraising programme - Spirit of Gold™. Thank you for your interest in being involved! As a charitable organisation, PNZ relies on a mix of donations and fundraisers, government funding and support from the public and business community to run our sport and community education programmes across NZ. Through support for Spirit of Gold™, we hope to increase awareness and national pride in Para-Sport ahead of Rio 2016 and to also raise the funds we need to support our elite Para-Athletes on the Road to Rio 2016 and onwards into the future. On behalf our Paralympians, thank you for your support! Fiona Allan Chief Executive, Paralympics New Zealand

Supporting Materials: About Paralympics New Zealand

Paralympics New Zealand Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) is the official National Paralympic Committee (NPC) for New Zealand and is one of over 170 NPC's worldwide affiliated to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). New Zealand was the most successful country in the world per capita at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, winning 17 medals (including six gold). We are targeting 18 medals, including 12 gold medals, at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games! PNZ has a three-fold purpose: 1.Prepare, select and lead NZ to international competitions and the Paralympic Games; 2.Work with athletes, partners and government to inspire those living with disability in NZ society by supporting and encouraging opportunities for them to participate in sports at all levels; and 3.Work to create greater awareness, understanding and acceptance of disability within the public As a charity, Paralympics New Zealand relies on a mix of donations and fundraisers, government funding and support from the business community to run our sport and community programmes. At this moment, we are focussed on fundraising to support our Paralympians on the ‘Road to Rio 2016’. For more information or to donate, visit us at www.paralympics.org.nz or on Facebook and Twitter.

Spirit of Gold™ Spirit of Gold™ is the new awareness and fundraising initiative from Paralympics New Zealand, launching on Monday 7 September 2015 to mark ‘1 year to go’ until the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Through it, we hope to: Increase awareness, understanding and pride in Paralympic Sport across New Zealand Raise funds to support our Para-Athletes and team during the coming Rio 2016 Paralympic Games campaign and to invest into developing Para-Sport and supporting Para-Athletes in NZ The term Spirit of Gold™ has been chosen as a way to represent the dual purpose of Paralympics New Zealand: ‘gold’ to recognise our high performance credentials and our gold medal winning performances and ‘spirit’ to represent caring for, inspiring and supporting the disability community. We also believe it is a perfect way to describe the unique mix of drive, ambition and desire that creates success on the world stage and provides inspiration to the next generation of Para-Athletes! Find out more about our sport and community programmes at www.paralympics.org.nz.

The year ahead... Over the next year, New Zealand’s Paralympic hopefuls will be training and working hard to complete qualification for one of the toughest sporting events in the world, the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Between 60-80 kiwi Para-Athletes have the potential to qualify and Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) is the organisation responsible for raising the funds required and preparing the team for the Games. With less than 400 days to go, PNZ is already organising everything from flights, to accommodation, meals, team uniforms, equipment, freight, vehicles, accreditation and tickets, insurance, plus medical and support services and much more. As a charity, PNZ relies on a mix of donations and fundraisers, government funding and support from the business community to run each Games campaigns. In particular, we are incredibly grateful to the New Zealand public for its continued support through donations at www.paralympics.org.nz or through fundraising activities. We know that you take just as much pride in our Paralympians as we do! With your help we know we can reach our ambitious Rio 2016 target of 18 medals, including 12 gold, and defend our ‘number 1 in the world per capita’ title!
