Pack 001 Introduction to 3D modeling Presenting Blender, the open source 3D environment Heikki Hietala IT Dept. Malmi Campus HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences

Course Description This is a 3ECTS course, aimed at getting you up to speed with 3D modeling We will discuss – the environment of Blender – Moving around in the Blender scene and changing views in it – Mesh modeling – Using the basic Modifiers – Basic lights, materials, and cameras

Aims of the course To become acquainted with the Blender interface which can be somewhat rough to newcomers To be able to move around in and manage a Blender scene To understand the basic ideas of modeling, ie. Vertices, edges, sides, faces, textures, materials To be able to take simple everyday objects and be able to create realistic Blender models of them

Structure 1.Introduction to 3D modeling 2.Pack 002 3D Modeling Basics 3.Blender installation and environment 4.Learning to use the Blender environment 5.Transforming objects in Blender 6.Tool shelf and Properties Window 7.Adding and moving more objects in Blender 8.Subdivision and Extrusion 9.Extrusion continued and Subdivision Surface 10.Materials and textures 11.Using curves and background images 12.Using the Simple Deformers 13.Basic lighting and cameras 14.Modifiers and add-ons 15.Rendering 16.UV Texture mapping

Assessment As this is a virtual learning environment course, I will assess you based on the objects you return to Moodle I will give you three small assignments and one bigger one The small ones are worth 20 points each and the big one 90 for a total of 150 points To pass, you need 75 points.

The three exercises (20 points) I will give you three tasks along with samples to use for reference You need to return the.blend file and two rendered images of the object you have made I will look at the object and see how well you have understood the principles of modeling and how you can turn a real object into a model

The main exercise (90 points) I will ask you to design a room with at least 8 different objects in it You will see an example of the room in this pack You need to return the.blend file of your room as well as at least 3 rendered images of it I will look at quality of objects as well as an all- round feel of the room

Coursework I will post Powerpoint files with Blender instructions into Moodle There will also be a set of video files for you to watch I will link to tutorials made by Blender artists I would like you to check Moodle weekly and find the file for each week – Read the file – Do the exercises – Do the gradable small tasks when they appear – At the end of the course, do the big task – Ask questions and discuss Blender in the discussion board

Additional material Blender is huge – I will not be able to tell you nearly everything you need to learn I will post links to discussion boards and tutorial sites for your additional material These links have been very useful for me as I learned Blender and they will assist you too You should join Blender Artists Community at http://blenderartists.org/forum/index.phpBlender Artists Community Much can be learned from posting your problems there or in our own Moodle discussions

What you can expect By the end of the course, you should be able to put together this room and the stuff in it And I know the legs of the round table are too thick

Another example I’ve spent about 30 hours on this Italian Romanesque church I am building I started it just to see if I could do it The following slides show the current status of the project I am showing these to tell you what you can expect to be able to do after 100 hours on Blender.

The ground is a placeholder now

The Altar

The stairs to the Bell Tower

After maybe 200 hours (and lots of time on the Internet, watching tutorials and doing stuff all wrong)

So what to expect? This course will not make you a 3D artist straight away This course will help you understand what you can easily do, and where to look for more info when you need some It may become addictive (I know of at least 3 students who have said so) It may be frustrating at first but when you get the ideas, there is no end to what you can make in Blender When in doubt, ASK ME in Moodle, and we all will learn more.

A couple of video links http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RhBZ- rS4wA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RhBZ- rS4wA – The first complete fly-around of the church http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=play er_embedded&v=2RhBZ-rS4wA http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=play er_embedded&v=2RhBZ-rS4wA – I made a Christmas card for my Facebook friends Animation as such is not covered in this basic course, but will be one of the tasks for closer examination in the Extended one
