1
Inside the Earth
2
Composition (What it is made of) Crust Mantle Core Inner Outer
3
The Crust Outer layer 5-100 km thick 2 types of crust –O–Oceanic (very dense, made of basalt) –C–Continental (less dense, made of granite)
4
Oceanic and Continental Crust
5
The Mantle Middle layer Very thick layer
6
The Core Made mostly of iron & nickel Outer core (molten) Inner Core (solid) 1/3 of the earth’s mass Very hot
7
Physical Structure of the Earth (5 Layers) Lithosphere- rigid outer layer (crust) Asthenosphere- solid rock that flows slowly (like hot asphalt) You will use a milky way candy bar to represent the layers of the earth (lithosphere & asthenosphere)
8
Milky Way Model Follow the teacher directions for opening the package and manipulating the candy bar. Think about which layer of the Milky Way would represent the: lithosphere (the hard outer covering where the plates are in the crust and upper mantle) asthenosphere (the flowing layer in the upper mantle that is molten and plastic-like)
9
Milky Way Observations Write down 5 qualitative observations about your candy bar on page 11 in your green notebook.
10
Milky Way Model Cont. Sketch your candy bar like below and label the lithosphere & asthenosphere.
11
Every model has strengths and weaknesses: Copy & complete the following chart on page 11 in your green notebook. StrengthsWeaknesses
12
Tectonic Plates Earth’s crust is broken into about 19 pieces and are found in the lithosphere These plates move on top of the asthenosphere Convection Currents cause the asthenosphere to be molten, which causes the lithosphere (plates) to move.
13
Earth’s Layers How are the earth’s layers similar to an egg? Shell=crust Egg white=mantle Yolk=core
14
HW: Bring a model from home of the layers of the earth Front of note card: sketch your model Back of card: T chart on strengths & weaknesses. Rules Your model must have at least one strength. You may not use anything that would be in your locker. Your model must fit in your hand and not be valuable.
