Fill in your calendar then take 2 pieces of colored paper DO NOT WRITE ON THEM YET!

Inside the Earth

Geology The study of Earth (composition & structure) 2 main types of forces change Earth’s surface 1. constructive forces- build land masses 2. destructive forces- wear away land masses

Earth’s History Uniformitarianism- idea that geological processes that change the Earth’s surface today have been occurring for many years About 4.6 BYO

Composition (What it is made of) Earth is divided into 3 main layers Crust Mantle Core These layers can be further divided…

Earth’s Layers How are the earth’s layers similar to an egg? Shell=crust Egg white=mantle Yolk=core

Use the vocabulary terms on the given ws to label the layers of the Earth in PENCIL! Color or somehow make the distinctions between the layers!

The Crust Outer-most layer 5-100 km thick 2 types of crust –O–Oceanic (very dense, made of basalt, ~40 km thick) –C–Continental (less dense, made of granite, ~7 km thick)

Oceanic & Continental Crust

Tectonic Plates Earth’s crust is broken into about 19 pieces These plates move on top of the asthenosphere

Moho Boundary that marks the separation between Earth’s crust & mantle ~ 20 to 90 km below Earth’s surface (10–60 mi) Marks the change in composition between crust and mantle

Mantle Middle layer Very thick layer (29,000 km thick, ~84% of Earth’s volume) Divided into 3 layers due to properties rock

Upper Mantle/Lithosphere Relatively cool, rigid rock Includes upper part of mantle & crust

Warmer which causes rock to be softer Rock flows in convection currents to regulate heat Causes movement of tectonic plates Asthenosphere

Mesosphere Highest temperatures in mantle but rock is stiff due to pressure Immediately above the core

Core Made of iron & nickel Temp is almost as hot as the sun’s surface High Pressure (3.6 million times the pressure at the surface) 2 layers

Outer Core Only section of Earth’s core that is liquid (due to composition & high temp) Flowing iron creates Earth’s magnetic field Solid mass of iron and nickel Solid b/c under very high pressure Inner Core

Geologist NB digging through Earth video (36 sec)
