Science 6.E.2.1 Earth’s Structure WEDNESDAY JANUARY 6 TH, 2016
2
Warm Up Bring your notebook, pencil, and agenda to your desk Complete Wednesday’s warm up now If you did not finish notes from yesterday, grab your chromebook now and complete this YOU ARE QUIET, WORKING WHEN THE BELL RINGS
3
Supplies needed for our clay models…. If you are able, please bring in all purpose flour and salt by Thursday We need these items to make our play dough Earth models on Friday
4
Rap sheet You will receive a sheet of paper with the lyrics to the Rap song “Layers of the Earth” Follow along to the video and fill in the sheets blank phrases. If anyone wants to they can rap along! Keep the sheet as a study guide
5
Pay close attention to the rap video https://www.youtube.com/wa tch?v=HOd7PRJMkkQ
6
Let’s Review now with a pop quiz You are able to use your notes to complete this 10 question pop quiz Clear off your desk except for your notebook and a pencil You will receive 2 folders to sit up around your desk You will have 15 minutes to complete this quiz
7
Trade and Grade I will collect the papers now I will pass out the papers again so you can grade a fellow classmates Remember this pop quiz does not really test anyone’s knowledge, just if you used your time wisely yesterday and copied all the notes Good Luck!
8
Have scientists ever seen the inside of the Earth? If not, how do scientists know what it is like?
9
Mystery Boxes! You are going to examine 1 of 4 boxes and make an inference as to what is inside each box Here’s the twist though….. You cannot open the box You can however lift the box, shake the box, smell the box ….basically use your senses other than sight to make conclusions and an inference as to what’s inside! You will work with everyone in your row to complete this activity Someone will be a recorder: the recorder will write the group’s inference on a note card to share with the class
10
Mystery boxes We will review each group’s inferences later…. Box 1 Box 2. Box 3. Box 4
11
Let’s investigate How scientists know what is inside the Earth even when they cannot see inside!? Every Changing Earth Textbooks: You will read the passages from read pg 71-73
12
Questions to answer in your notebook – raise your hand when you are done 1. What is the main tool scientists use to study the Earth’s interior? 2. What are seismic waves? How do seismic waves travel inside the Earth? 3. Why do scientists study chunks of mantle rock they collect after volcanic eruptions? 4. What is one final way scientists infer what is inside the Earth aside from studying rock samples and seismic waves?
13
Let’s create a “slice” of earth You will be given a slice of Earth You will be labelling, coloring, and adding details to each layer
14
Let’s create a “slice” of earth You will label the 4 layers now
15
Let’s create a “slice” of earth You will lightly color the layers now Oceanic Crust-blue Continental Crust - brown Mantle-Yellow Outer Core-Orange Inner Core-Red
16
Facts about the Layers You will now move around the hallway to gather your facts about each layer You only have 5 minutes to record this information Remember you are recording the following: Composition (what it is made of) Thickness (in miles)
17
Facts about the Layers Continental Crust Composition: granite rock and loose materials Thickness: 25 Miles deep
18
Facts about the Layers Oceanic Crust Composition: basalt rock Thickness: 5 Miles deep
19
Facts about the Layers Mantle Composition: super heated rock material Thickness: 1,800 Miles deep Draw a convection current in this layer as well
20
Facts about the Layers Outer Core Composition: super heated magma; liquid layer of iron and nickel Thickness: 1,400 Miles deep This layer is responsible for the Earth’s magnetic field
21
Facts about the Layers Inner Core Composition: solid layer of iron and nickel Thickness: 780 Miles deep Nearly as hot as the surface of the sun!
22
Let’s create…. Now we will put several “slices of the Earth” together to make a sphere detailing the interior of the Earth
23
Ed Helper You will receive this worksheet for homework Once your slice of Earth is complete you may start working on this worksheet
24
Another Music Video Mr. Lee “Layers of the Earth” Write one phrase you remember Earth's Layers Earth's Layers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= RiHRI_Z2Kgs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= RiHRI_Z2Kgs
