What happened to the Idaho Rhinos? Sort the cards out to explain what happened to the Idaho Rhinos.

The key idea of the lesson is… By the end of the lesson you will… Supervolcanoes Supervolcanoes are on a much bigger scale than other volcanoes and an eruption would have global consequences. The characteristics of a super volcano and the likely effects of an eruption. have an annotated map, and notes to explain: - the characteristics of a supervolcano -the effects of a super volcanic eruption at Yellowstone - the possible responses to a super eruption
3
Supervolcanoes (or Hot Spot Volcanoes) Two theories: An abnormal hot part of the mantle, causing an mantle plume. As the lithosphere passes over this it melts forming the volcano. The plate deforms internally by extending (lithosphere extension), this allows melted rock to rise to the surface. Current ‘best’ theory

Supervolcanoes (or Hot Spot Volcanoes)
6
Supervolcanoes vs. Classic Volcanoes Massive eruptions (1000 km 3 of material compared to 1 km 3 ) Less frequent eruptions (hundreds of thousands of years) Has a caldera Often has a large ridge of land around the caldera

Scenario: You are part of a team of volcano experts invited to Yellowstone to help manage the predicted eruption of the supervolcano. There have been a number of earthquakes around the caldera. Now a dome is growing in the centre of the caldera. A helicopter pilot and several reporters are sending back reports. It is up to your team to collect the reports, map the volcanic activity and make the crucial decisions required to manage the situation.

Each team requires the following members: Information coordinator: Your role is to monitor the reports coming in and take them to the rest of the team. Geologist Your role is to make a map of the volcanic hazard, and work with the crisis manager on a plan for ensuring the safety of the public. Crisis manager Your role is to make important decisions to manage the crisis. You have the reports from the helicopter and the advice of the geologist. After you make a decision send your advice to the FEMA official immediately. You will get instant feedback on your decision. Roles:

Supervolcanoes - Yellowstone Explain how supervolcanoes are formed Compare supervolcanoes to normal volcanoes Write a report to world leaders set after a Yellowstone eruption. Describe and explain the short and long term effects, and suggest some responses. Justify your responses. Produce a spider diagram showing the effects of a super eruption at varying scales.
