Happy Tuesday! Bellwork: March 18 Write the question and your answer 3) Which of the following correctly describes an interaction that occurs between two body systems of a rabbit that helps the rabbit outrun a pursuing coyote? A) The skeletal system releases additional calcium, and the circulatory systems retains more sodium in the blood to provide muscles with ions for concentration. B) The digestive system increases the rate of digestion, and the excretory system ceases to provide tissues with more nutrients. C) The respiratory system increases the breathing rate, and the circulatory system increases blood pressure to provide tissues with more oxygen. D) The endocrine system releases hormones that prepare the immune system to deal with possible injuries.

Show what you know! (true or false) 1.Sperm are made in the vas deferens. 2.Testicular cancer is most common in men over 50 years old. 3.Estrogen is the primary hormone in males. 4.Eggs are made in the ovaries. 5.A woman produces several eggs every month.

Answers… 1.False, sperm are made in the testes. 2.False, most cases of testicular cancer occur in males 15-35 years old. 3.False, testosterone is the primary hormone in males. 4.True, eggs are made in the ovaries. 5.False, women typically produce and release only one egg per month.

Sexual Reproduction – In humans, the reproductive system produces, stores, and releases specialized sex cells known as gametes. – Gametes are released to create the fusion of sperm and egg to form a zygote, the single cell from which all cells of the human body develop. Sexual Reproduction

Sexual Development Puberty is a period of rapid growth and sexual maturation during which the reproductive system becomes fully functional. When puberty ends, reproductive organs are fully developed. Puberty usually begins between the ages of 9 and 15, and usually starts one year earlier in females than in males.

Reproduction Hormones Hormone:Produced by:Function: TestosteroneTesticlesTriggers male sex traits Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) PituitaryStimulates egg/sperm development Stimulates estrogen Luteinizing hormone (LH)PituitaryStimulates Testosterone Regulates the release of egg, corpus luteum, progesterone EstrogenOvariesTriggers female sex traits ProgesteroneCorpus luteumMaintains Uterus lining What system does this work with? __________________________________

The Male Reproductive System Function of the male reproductive system: To produce & deliver sperm

The Male Reproductive System A sperm cell consists of: a head, which contains the nucleus a midpiece, which contains energy- releasing mitochondria a flagella, which propels the cell forward Head Nucleus Midpiece Mitochondria Tail

Diseases and Disorders of the Male Reproductive System Disease/DisorderDescription Prostate cancerMost common form of cancer in men over 40; risks of developing it increase with age ProstatitisInflammation of the prostate gland; may be acute or chronic Testicular cancerMalignant growth in one or both testicles; more common in males 15–30 years; more aggressive malignancy

The Female Reproductive System Functions of the female reproductive system: 1.To produce eggs 2.To nourish and support a developing embryo Ovaries: primary reproductive organs – The ovaries are located in the abdominal cavity.

Path of the Egg (Ova)

The Menstrual Cycle Menstrual cycle: when an egg develops and is released from an ovary – The uterus is prepared to receive a fertilized egg. – If the egg is fertilized, it is implanted in the uterus and embryonic development begins. – If the egg is not fertilized, it is discharged. The menstrual cycle is controlled by internal feedback mechanisms between the reproductive system and the endocrine system. The cycle takes an average of 28 days.

The Menstrual Cycle *Most females menstruate during the first 3-7 days of the cycle.

Diseases and Disorders of the Female Reproductive System Disease/DisorderDescription Breast cancerSecond leading cause of cancer deaths in women; classified as stage 0 to 4 Cervical cancerSlow to develop; Pap smear detects abnormal cervical cells CervicitisInflammation of the cervix usually due to an infection DysmenorrheaCondition with severe menstrual cramps limiting normal activities

Sage and Scribe Partner A will tell Partner B the answers to the cloze passage Partner B records the answers Then… Partner B summarizes the cloze passage Partner A records what Partner B says
