Before the introduction of the Manly Ferry in 1859 You would have to travel as far west as Parramatta to circumnavigate the harbour and Parramatta river. 7 How has Manly changed over time? Manly council area is located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches between 8 and 17 kilometers north east of Sydney. The manly council area is predominantly residential with some commercial and industrial land use. The council encompasses approximately 16 square kilometers including substantial areas of foreshore and water frontage. Manly is named after Manly Cove which was named by Captain Arthur Phillip who was impressed by the confident, manly behavior of the male Aborigines he saw when he first visited in January 1788. The original inhabitants of the Manly area were the Guringai Aboriginal people. European settlement dates from 1810 when the first lad grants were made, mainly for land to be used for farming. Population was minimal until the mid 1850s. In the 1850s the village of Manly was established as Australia’s first seaside resort and regular ferry services started. Rapid growth took place from 1880s as the area became a popular seaside resort. Expansion continued throughout the 1920s, spurred on by improved access. Significant development occurred in the post war years with many apartment and unit blocks built in the 60s and 70s. Much of the surrounding suburbs were also developed in the 1960s including Clontarf, Seaforth and Balgowlah. Population increased slightly during the 1990s rising to about 36500 by 2001 and has remained stable since this time. Major features include manly town centre, Sydney Harbour National Park, lookouts etc, Garrigal National Park, Manly Wharf, Royal Australian Artillery Museum, Quarantine Station, Manly Art Gallery and Museum, Oceanworld, Manly District Hospital, Manly Scenic Walk, Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve, as well as the Manly Water-Works and various beaches and parks. 8 Factors causing change Social change: better town planning, friends of Manly Economic change: New shopping centres (the Mall, loss of Fun Pier) Infrastructure: 1974 boardwalk destroyed by storm and never replaced Local Studies http://www.manly.nsw.gov.au/library/local-studies-collection/ History of Manly http://www.manly.nsw.gov.au/library/local-studies-collection/history-of-manly/ Places and Walks http://www.manly.nsw.gov.au/library/local-studies-collection/places-and-walks/

9 Response to change Can be seen in Manly Daily: letters to the editor, etc. By voting with their feet, (i.e. leaving the area) Changes to shopping centers,(small local centers replaced by malls and supercenters) Nudist beach Fairy Penguins Marine Reserves Pooo marches Stable population has not allowed for the large scale changes and developments seen in other Sydney suburbs Pooo marches: http://manly-daily.whereilive.com.au/blogs/story/clean-up-manly1/http://manly-daily.whereilive.com.au/blogs/story/clean-up-manly1/ Local Studies http://www.manly.nsw.gov.au/library/local-studies-collection/ History of Manly http://www.manly.nsw.gov.au/library/local-studies-collection/history-of-manly/ Places and Walks http://www.manly.nsw.gov.au/library/local-studies-collection/places-and-walks/
