OBJECTIVES Given a list of cities located in Latin America, students will be able to identify the correct capital of a selected Latin American country within two tries. Given a map of a country, students will be able to describe and compare major physical characteristics within one attempt.

7  Managua is the capital of Nicaragua. It is the largest city in Nicaragua in terms of population and geographic size.

8  Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America and has a variety of characteristics ranging from the coastline to tropical rain forest and savannahs.

9  The highlands are much cooler because of the high elevation while the lowlands are much warmer.

14  San José is the capital of Costa Rica. It is culturally European influenced because of Spanish immigration and has no standing army.

15  Costa Rica has a coastline to both the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. There is the tropical coastal plains rising to mountains, active volcanoes, and a central plateau.

16  Costa Rica is most known for its abundance of beautiful rain forests which are protected, consisting of a quarter of the land.

21  Brasília is the capital of Brazil. It was founded in 1960 in order to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location.

22  Brazil’s physical features are not mountainous, but characterized by its highlands, plateaus, and river basins. The defining feature is the Amazon River Basin which covers more than 60% of the country (northern and western parts).

23  These features results in most of the climate being humid tropical or subtropical.

28  Havana is the capital of Cuba. It is the third largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region!

29  Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, making the landscape very beautiful with a lot of reefs, bays, keys, and islets.

30  There are plenty of caves and an immense amount of flora and fauna due to the semitropical climate.

35  Sucre is the capital of Bolivia. It is the official capital and its seat of justice even though La Paz has more government departments.

36  Bolivia is a landlocked nation and has the highest average altitude. The most prominent feature is Lake Titicaca which is the highest (elevation) commercially navigable body of water in the world.

37  It is also South America’s largest lake, and moderates the climate, making crops of maize and wheat possible.

38  Lake Titicaca is also home to what is known as the floating islands. These islands are made and re-made from the totora reeds which provide home, sustenance and transportation for their residents.

43  Santiago is the capital of Chile. It is the largest city of Chile and is within a few hours of both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

44  Chile is wedged between the deepest ocean and the longest mountain chain and is straddling a tectonically unstable region. Mountains cover 80% of the country.

45  Due to its location, Chile has suffered many earthquakes resulting in massive destruction, such as this one from 1960.
