The Rise of Cities (1840-1860) Resulted from…..overall population boom, canals and railroads, immigration, and the Industrial Revolution NYC from 300,000 to 1.2 million Also major growth in Chicago, Philly, Cincinnati, Louisville, and Pittsburgh (see map for Top 10 cities)

The Rise of Immigration Big boom in immigration in 1830’s and 1840’s 1840-1850- 1.5 million immigrants Most immigrants are Irish (potato famine 1845) and German Irish stayed in cities, many Germans moved to Northwest to farm

Some Liked Immigrants Factory owners saw more cheap labor Political leaders saw potential votes Land Speculators and Westerners saw a way to expand and become more relevant

Nativism Others saw immigrants as a great threat Nativism- hostility to foreign born people, sometimes openly hateful and racist, an attempt to defend the livelihood of native born citizens

Nativist Groups- Combat the “Alien Menace” The Native American Party- 1845 The Supreme Order of the Star Spangled Banner- 1850 (a combination of groups) “I Know Nothing”- secret password Became known as the “Know-Nothings” and advocated more restrictive naturalization, no foreign born people to hold office, literacy tests, banning Catholics office and jobs, etc.

The Cycle of Nativism Nativism comes and goes throughout history and is often hypocritical Once one group of immigrants are established they discriminate against the next group Still controversial today
