Periodization Historical thinking involves the ability to analyze and construct models that historians use to organize history into discrete periods. To accomplish this, historians identify “turning points.” – “Turning point”= when a decisive change in a situation occurs Changing periodization can change a historical narrative. When did Reconstruction end? When did slavery end? When did American expansion end?

Periodization Explain ways that historical events and processes can be organized within blocks of time. Analyze and evaluate competing models of periodization of U.S. history.
