Why are we talking about COLLEGE now? Start planning high school course work Help students make the connection between today’s classes and the future Setting up a culture where college/career planning is important Informed parents are better consumers

A-G Requirements for 4 Year Colleges All Classes require a C or better for four year colleges Mostly the same as graduation requirement except Math and Foreign Language Possible for all students Insures readiness for all post high school plans- community college, technical schools, military, careers

A-G Categories A- History/Social Science 2 years- World History, 1 year of US History and/or US Govt. B- English- 4 years C- Mathematics- Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 minimum D- Science- 2 years One year of Biology, One year of Physical Science, Chemistry for UC schools E- Foreign Language- Minimum of 2 years of the SAME language OR be fluent in a language other than English and be able to test F- Fine Arts- One full year of the same course G- Elective- One year of a college prep elective- could be in additional English, Science or Math

Math and Science Readiness Math and Science is NOT a race Summer school ONLY to repeat year long experiences, not first time exposure Each level builds on the next Insure your child knows their concepts well before moving on

TYPES OF COLLEGES Community College Ex. El Camino Harbor Santa Monica Pros: Inexpensive Local Flexible Cons: Heavily impacted Student must be very motivated Public Ex. UC System Cal State System Pros: Affordable Diverse majors Lots of locations and types of campuses Cons: Reduced budgets Impaction Higher student/faculty ratio Private Ex. USC Stanford Loyola Marymount Pros: Low student/faculty ratios Lots of student support Large endowments for scholarships Cons: COST- without scholarships or financial aid- EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE
