Higher-Account for the strategies adopted by ONE EU country to cope with an ageing population (8 marks) Case study UK To get 8 marks you must explain more than one strategy Raise the retirement age – currently 65 for men and 60 for women by 2046 it will be 68 for everyone Encourage immigration of young people to the UK - around 80 % of immigrants to the UK are 34 or under increasing the number paying taxes, which helps to pay for state services and pensions Encourage women to have children – working family tax credits make it more affordable for women to go back to work Encourage people to take out private pensions so people not so dependent on the state pension Foundation same question worded differently but only worth 6 marks

Explain the difference between the richer and poorer parts of the world (3 marks) Rapid urbanisation in poorer parts of world due to rural-urban migration Current rates of urbanisation increasing due to industrialisation and economic development in poorer countries Major urbanisation has already taken place in rich countries hence already high levels of urbanisation

Using figures 5a and 5b and your own knowledge, explain how rapid urbanisation and industrialisation in poorer parts of the world lead to pollution in urban areas (8marks) Must refer to figures in higher paper and own knowledge Figure 5a shows a shanty town in an Asian country where water looks polluted. This happens because rapid rural-urban migration means the city grows too fast to build facilities to cope and sewage is left untreated. 800 million litres of sewage go into the River Mumbai every day Figure 5b shows the air pollution produced by the factories where air pollution is not controlled. The factories are old and have old technology releasing lots of fumes into the air e.g many cities in China suffer very high levels of air pollution. Factories also dump waste directly into rivers here Similar question for foundation but only 6 marks

Describe one or more strategies to support multicultural communities in urban areas (4 marks) Hospitals in big cities (Birmingham) to help people who can’t speak English speak to the doctors In some cities they invite cultural leaders to meetings that will affect their area Leaflets in government areas are printed in different languages so communities can understand Making sure there are suitable services for different cultures e.g. for some cultures it is unacceptable to be seen by a doctor of the opposite sex EAL Classes

Outline how CBDs can be improved (3 marks) (or revitalised as it says on the foundation paper) Refer to a case study- Birmingham CBD pedestrianized – safer, nicer for shoppers Improving access- better public transport links ( new train station at New Street) and better car parking Improving public spaces to make them more attractive e.g. Brindley Place Converting old buildings into new attractive ones e.g Bull Ring shopping centre

What is mass tourism ? (2marks) Mass tourism is organised tourism with large numbers of people all going to the same place at the same time The definition must include the purple words to get the marks!

Use figure 16 and your own knowledge to describe the negative effects of mass tourism (4 marks) Must refer to the figure and own knowledge Mass tourism means a large number of tourists visiting a popular destination which creates negative impacts Signs work to conserve the environment The sign in figure 16 tries to educate tourists about the problem of feeding the birds and the harm it can do and that the species is Federally protected which means it is against the law to harm them The tourists can observe the wildlife but not cause harm

Use a case study to discuss how well an extreme environment is coping with the development of a tourist industry (8 marks) Must refer to an extreme tourism Case study e.g Antarctica Antarctica is coping well with tourism in some ways The Antarctic treaty agreed to limits on tourism in Antarctic. Only ships with fewer than 500 passengers allowed to land and only 100 passengers allowed on shore. IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators) to regulate activity and have a Code of Conduct. Specifically Protected Areas – these are off limits to tourists. No litter can be left behind. All tourists are supervised by a registered guide BUT ….. Disruption of penguins still happens Spillages from boats are inevitable and thus pollution still happens which takes a long time to decompose
