Compounds and Mixtures
2
What is a compound? Compound: pure substance made up of two or more elements chemically combined. Compound is formed as a result of a chemical Δ.
3
What are molecules? Molecule: smallest part of a substance that has all the properties of the substance. Pure substance: any element or compound.
4
Diatomic molecule Diatomic molecule: a molecule that has two atoms of the same element joined together. O O Oxygen molecule
5
Combining atoms Water is a compound made up of the elements hydrogen and oxygen. One molecule of water contains two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.
6
Combining atoms H 2 O is a compound made up of the elements H and O. 1 molecule of H 2 O contains 2 atoms of H and1 atom of O.
7
What are mixtures? Mixture : two or more substances that have been mixed together but not chemically combined. Mixture can be present in any amount. You can separate mixtures using physical means Boiling point, density, etc
8
Separating a mixture
9
How are compounds and mixtures different?
10
TYPES OF MIXTURES Homogenous : A mixture in which the components are EVENLY mixed Example: Kool-aid Heterogeneous : A mixture where the components are not mixed evenly Example: Salads, Some chocolate chip cookies
