2 DRAFTING (and Computer- Aided Drafting, or CAD) is the graphic language of industry. The DRAFTER creates 2 and/or 3- dimensional drawings and models for the purpose of manufacturing and construction… What is Drafting & CAD?

3 …without which none of these could be built! What is Drafting & CAD?

4 Drafting  Four-year, 6 credit program  Mechanical & Architectural  Manual & Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) Skills.  Independent Study Option in fourth year  ADDA National Drafter Certification Exam (end of Drafting II course)  Autodesk Certified User Exams

5 Instructor:  Robert Jett, CD (Certified Mechanical & Architectural Drafter), AutoCAD Certified User  SHS Drafting Teacher since 1989  Mechanical Drafter, General Products Co., 1985-88  Civil Drafter, City of Fredericksburg, 1984-85  Free-Lance Drafter since 1985  3 years of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech and Old Dominion University  BPS, Computer Technology, UMW  Stafford High School Class of 1985  VICA* District XI Champion, Machine Drafting, 1984  Board Member: Stafford County Vocational Education Foundation, SkillsUSA Foundation & Board of Directors * VICA = Vocational Industrial Clubs of America; the name was changed to SkillsUSA in 2004.

6 The Drafting Lab at Stafford High School… It has the modern (computers & plotters) and the traditional (drawing boards & manual drawing equipment)...

7 The Drafting Courses: DRAFTING I – Fundamentals (Course 8530): Learn fundamentals of technical drawing in accordance with ANSI/ASME* Y14 standards and CAD (computer-aided design) – 1 credit DRAFTING II - Advanced Mechanical (Course 8531): Learn to prepare production design drawings with proper specs, including 3-D computer modeling. Earn ADDA National Drafter Certification – 2 credits DRAFTING III - Architecture (Course 8532): Learn to prepare working construction drawings for residences using CAD and manual drawing techniques – 2 credits DRAFTING IV – Independent Study (Course 9900J): Design the next BOOTS house; Construct architectural models; Create animations; APPLY your Drft. I-III skills! – 1 credit * American National Standards Institute, American Society of Mechanical Engineers

8 Drafting I (1 credit) Drafting I students learn the basics of mechanical drafting, first on the drawing board (below left), then using AutoCAD. They learn methods of shape & size description. The CAD drawing with dimensions below was created by a first year student and is ready for production.

9 Drafting II (2 credits) Drafting II students learn advanced mechanical drafting concepts such as 3-D modeling, geometric dimensioning & tolerance, welding symbols and creating assembly and detail drawings. They apply the basics of design in projects such as these custom auto rims, which includes creating ABS plastic 3D prototypes using the 3D printer. Left: 3D proto- type of an old favorite: the Control Bracket

10 Drafting II (continued) Sample set of working drawings: ASSEMBLY

11 Drafting II (continued) Sample set of working drawings: DETAILS

12 ADDA Certified Drafter (CD) exam Drafting II students may also earn their national drafter certification. Beginning with the Class of 2004, students need 6 verified credits (2 in English) to graduate…The American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) Drafter Certification Exam is approved by the State Bd. of Education as a test for Verified Credit! It is a 400 question, 2½ hour online exam taken by all Drafting II students in May each year. Passing Score: 75% Passing score = EXEMPT from final exam Passing Rate: 70% GREAT addition to job application, resume’

13 Autodesk Certified User exams Students in Drafting II - IV may also earn their AutodCAD, Inventor, or Revit user certification. Exams are 30 questions each with 60 minute time limit Questions are multiple choice, matching and performance-based Passing Scores: Inventor-580; AutoCAD-600 Passing Score also earns Final Exam Exemption. Examinees receive a detailed score analysis. Examinees who pass receive a certificate. GREAT addition to resume’, college or job application

14 Drafting III (2 Credits) Drafting III students learn the concepts & applications of residential design. They will prepare complete construction drawings that are ready to be submitted for a building permit, such as this floor plan…

15 Drafting III (Continued) Drafting III students create their own set of working house plans, including… Elevations Floor Plans & Schedules Foundation Plan

16 Drafting III (Continued) and also… Sections & Details Site Plan Students also learn to prepare electrical plans. HVAC and plumbing plans are covered if time permits.

17 Independent Study; for Seniors only Apply the skills from Dr. I, II and III Choose architecture or engineering Learn new software(s) Work-study: Earn and Learn! Design the next BOOTS home Drafting IV (1 Credit) Drafting IV Projects: Model of an orphanage in Piedro Negras, Mexico; BOOTS XVIII home; Exploded view of a Briggs & Stratton carburetor assembly

18 Drafting IV (1 Credit) Virtual Walkthrough of City of Hope Cathedral San Antonio, Texas By Amy Wood, Drafting IV, 2012-13 Software: Revit Architecture, MS Movie Maker

19 SHS Drafting… Drafting IV student Amy Wood teaches a abstract tower design to Drafting III students Armed Services Memorial design by Donnie Kelley, portions to be incorporated into memorial End-of-year lunchDrafting III surveying exercise which located the SHS marquee sign Aircraft landing gear animation by Drafting IV student Greg Bohmke

20 BOOTS homes are designed and built by Stafford High’s Drafting, Electricity, Masonry and Carpentry students. It begins with the plans created by Drafting IV students. BOOTS: Bringing Occupational Opportunities to Schools BOOTS XVI 2007 BOOTS XXIII 2015 BOOTS XXII 2014
