What Job is Right for You? Positions within the Federal Government are classified by pay plan, occupational series and grade. GS – 0201 – 04 GS – General Schedule (Pay Plan) (White Collar) 0201 – Job/Occupational Series (like an MOS) 04 - Grade 7

Appropriated Funds – Funded by Congress – General Schedule (GS) - White Collar Positions – Federal Wage Grade System (WG, WS, WL, etc.) - Blue Collar Positions (craft, trade, labor) – Senior Executive Service (SES) - Equivalent to CEOs and Generals Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF) – Generate own funds – Various types of jobs - Childcare, recreation, lifeguard, etc. Pay Plans 8

Series Numbers What is a “Series” Number? A number that represents an occupational group or a job family. The STAR Program was developed to: – Increase marketing and general awareness of DoD civilian career and scholarship opportunities – Promote DoD as an “employer of choice” through student peer-to-peer interaction/recruitment on campus – Increase a diverse applicant pool of highly skilled candidates for the DoD civilian workforce – Provide a vehicle to establish and sustain relationships with colleges/universities and prospective job applicants Student Training and Academic Recruitment (STAR) Program 15

It is a win-win three-way partnership: – Department of Defense – TSU Career Services Office – TSU STAR Student The STAR Program is managed by: – The DoD, Defense Civilian Personnel Advisory Service, Recruitment Assistance Division (RAD) in Alexandria, VA A Win….Win….Partnership with TSU 16

DoD Responsibilities include: – Coordinate with universities to develop a STAR Program on campus – Manage the STAR Program – Provide a one-week orientation to train students to be DoD Recruiters and meet recruiters/hiring managers from DoD Agencies – Pay the salary of the STAR Student & their travel to D.C. for training Student Responsibilities include: – Have and maintain a 3.0 GPA – Work 20 hours per week and serve as our DoD On-Campus Recruiter – Conduct Information Sessions and attend/participate in Career Fairs – Meet one-on-one with peers (share job opportunities and explain the federal hiring process) DoD and Student Responsibilities 17

University Responsibilities include: – Agree to partner with DoD and sign an agreement – Provide office space for the STAR Program student – Designate a representative to oversee the student – Career Services Directors/Staff may also participate in the one-week orientation University Responsibilities 18
