3 THE TEST PAPERS Children sit an English and Maths paper and a Reasoning paper. They also complete a writing exercise. The English and Maths paper takes 1 hour. Each section has a 5 minute practice exercise followed by a 25 minute test. The Reasoning paper takes 1 hour. It will contain a verbal reasoning section and a non verbal reasoning section of roughly the same length. The writing exercise takes 40 minutes, including 10 minutes planning time. The answer sheets for all but the writing are multiple- choice.

4 REASONING (1 HOUR) Verbal Reasoning In these questions, the same letter must fit into both sets of brackets, to complete the word in front of the brackets and begin the word after the brackets. 9 Your child’s score Scores are standardised using the pupil’s age. Your child will get three standardised scores; 1 for English, 1 for Maths and 1 for Reasoning. A standardised score of 100 represents an average performance for a child of a given age, with the lowest standardised score normally around 70 and the highest around 140. The threshold score for a Kent grammar school assessment can be different each year, because it takes into account the results children achieve.

11 CAT TESTS Each pupil in Year 5 sat a series of tests. We have the results for you to look at. Please discuss your child’s results with their class teacher if you have any questions.
