WIDA MODEL: Grades 1-12 Measure of Developing English Language

MODEL Determines a student’s English language proficiency as described by WIDA ELP standards Contains language and content appropriate for grade and proficiency level Assesses a student’s abilities in the domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing Scores correlate to WIDA’s ELP levels

Goals To serve as formative assessment to inform instructional planning To provide guidance about the type of instructional services and level of support needed for ELs To offer additional data to assist with appropriate ACCESS tier placement To provide a measure of student growth for teacher SLOs

Administration Will be piloted in schools in 2014-2015 Materials: Fall: Student Response Booklets with Writing Task 1 Spring: Student Response Booklets with Writing Task 2 First semester students in a grade band are tested with the previous grade band test (Ex. 6 th graders will take the 3-5 test in December) Decide in advance if you are administering the full MODEL test or the abbreviated Screener version highlighted in orange in the script

Testing Guidelines Required sequence is Speaking, Listening, Writing, Reading May administer in 1 session or 2 sessions ≤ 48 hours apart Speaking & Listening Must be in the same session Must be given individually to all students Writing & Reading Must be in the same session May be given in a group of ≤ 5 students

Speaking Use the WIDA Speaking Rubric to determine if a student response meets or approaches expectations The teacher immediately records the score in the Student Response Booklet Use a ? as a temporary placeholder if you are unsure of the scoring and move to next task Items may be repeated or rephrased one time as listed in the script if requested by the student

Listening Teacher reads the script with a natural rate of speech Read items only 1 time Repeat items once only if there is a severe disturbance (Ex. fire alarm or loudspeaker announcement) The student points or says the letter of their answer choice The teacher records the score in the Student Response Booklet

Listening Listening Step 1 has 4 items that all students complete Listening Step 1 is scored immediately The number correct on Listening Step 1 & Speaking determines if the student will complete the Low, Mid, or High Listening Step 2 Step 2 consists of 9 or 12 items Listening Step 2 is scored at the end of the entire test

Writing Part A Approximately 1 minute Open ended picture prompt If the student produces English words, phrases, or simple sentences, go on to Part B If not, move to Reading Step 1

Writing Part A These samples contain only copied text or responses in a native language The teacher should wind down the Writing section and continue with Reading Step 1 The teacher should continue with Writing Part B

Writing Part A These samples contain single words and short phrases in English Even with errors, the text is comprehensible

Writing Part B Approximately 20 minutes, 5 additional minutes can be given if needed If the student is off-topic, you may redirect by repeating the prompt one time

Writing Quick Score Part B is immediately given a Quick Score of Low, Mid, or High Most students will score in the Mid range The full Writing Score Sheet is used after the entire test for a more detailed score

Scoring the Writing Test If the student completes Part B, that is scored first Part A is scored only if The student did not complete Part B Part B is not-ratable Part B score is < 3-

Writing Score Sheet Has all 6 ELP levels and a Non-ratable score option A condensed version of the writing rubric is located on the right side Abbreviations are used for Performance Definitions Lx- Linguistic Complexity Vu-Vocabulary Usage Lc-Language Control

Writing Scoring Sheet Determine if the response meets the expectations of a level

Score Adjustments After determining the overall level of the response Read the response again Determine if there are strengths or weaknesses in one category (Lx, Vu, or Lc) If the student’s writing is strong or weak in one feature, you may assign a + or – (Lc 2+)

Reading The student records responses in the Student Response Booklet Passages or questions may not be read aloud for students Reading Step 1 has 4 items all students complete The number correct on Reading Step 1 & Writing Quick Score determines if the student will complete the Low, Mid, or High Reading Step 2

Reading Score Reading Step 2 after the entire test using the key in the manual The placement and total number should be recorded in the box on the Student Response Booklet
